Having a problem replacing thermostat on our '77 Doba (400). Can't seem to stop it from leaking. We made sure the surface was cleaned up good, we have a new housing and we are using blue silicone. Wonder if anyone out there might have an idea for us. Thanks

Chrome did not work for me. I bought a Mancini Billlet housing and no leaks.

No it is not a chrome one but guess we are going to try a billet one. Thanks for the replies.

Sometimes when you assemble it the thermostat does not get centered and slips out of the cutout section of the housing top causing a leak. Don' ask me how I know this.

Thanks for the replies. We already got a new thermostat but this time we will check to make sure it seats good.

set it up like this.turn water outlet upside down.place thermostat in it,glue gasket to housing using permitex #2.(holding the stat in place for installation.)use a light filmof a good rtv(ulta seal or right stuff)let skin up according to directions.install and be happy!no way that setup will leak.done it many times here at the shop.

X2 but follow torque specs.

Every thermostat I have bought that were a stant had a self adhesive gasket and if you don't peel the paper off the sticky it will piss coolant every where.

Sorry, I was being a smart ***!

Actually when you think about it, that sticky side of the gasket kind of tells you that no sealer is needed.

I always use a paper gasket and Permotex #2. I still don't know WHY people use RTV With a gasket as it is a Gasket Maker on it's own and NOT a gasket Sealer. I have seen WAY to many gaskets push out and leak even worse with that stuff in place. Just my 2 cents but I hate seeing a motor with RTV all Ozzing out of it. And just an FYI Permotex #2 is NONE hardning and easy to work with. Not like the old Indian head stuff.
