It seems that as soon as I fix one problem on the Six Pack, that there's another one that crops up. I'm getting really tired of this crap.

My stock 440 Six Pack runs really strong but lately, it has become very hard to start - hot or cold. It has an MSD ignition system and coil. I pump and pump and pump and pump and it turns and turns and turns and turns and eventually starts. Sometimes gas fumes will pop up out of the middle carb while trying to start it. Any suggestions?

do you have a fuel pressure gauge? that's one way to tell if the fuel pump is taking a dump

Shouldn't have to pump at all, I just tap the pedal with ignition on to set choke and idle selonoid and it fires instantly from dead cold every time.
When the engine is hot and been sitting for 30 min or so I need to give it a half pedal while cranking and it fires in a few seconds.
Sounds like no fuel for some reason.

You may want to check the gas your running ? The Ethinal in todays cas Won't fire rite off and is a Bitch !!!
Try some treatment and see if that help's ??

It sounds like you're ultimately flooding it with the pumping. Be careful cause that middle carb will start on fire if you're not. Had it happen several times on mine. Can you have someone else try to start it and see if you're getting gas right away. If not you have to wonder about the fuel pump system.

If you're getting gas and keep pumping it - you know what happens then. It may not be the carbs.....

Check your float level when you expect this to happen. And, check if your needle & seat is stuck.

Could be a vacuum leak I suppose. If so, how can I find it?
Normally when you first develop a vacuum leak your engine will have a higher idle speed than normal.

I would remove your air cleaner. Pull your throttle linkage back about halfway, and watch your choke close. (Do this when bone cold) If it doesn't close then make adjustments.

Now if the choke is working properly hold choke open while pulling back on the throttle linkage and look for a good squirt of gas. If there isn't any then your carb bowl is low on gas. (Several reasons why this would be)

Do this without engine running and ignition off!

Try these procedures and get back to us...

Points distributor....put that electronic junk in And 50% of the time its dead in the box it came in.. people laugh at points but it is more reliable and you can fix it usually for free...

Choke is disabled. My starting problem happens all the time whether hot or cold. Float level was checked and is ok. Someone please send me a miracle. :icon_hang::BangHead::violent-smiley-100:

check the simple stuff first.did you check for good squirt from accel pump?check timing, just because you never know.pull a plug and look at it.can tell a lot about how a motor is running.

You stated that it's one problem after another. What was the last thing that you fixed?

Also having your choke hooked up will help with starting...

Life would be boring without problems.

Do you have one of those Mopar orange boxes? Check that!
If not, might be your power valve in the centre carb, dumping heaps of fuel and flooding it. Check your oil level as that's where your fuel is going, into the sump. Smell the dipstick.
Centre carb is a bugger, they basically all have to come off to get it off.

are you cracking the throttle when you crank it, some combo's need that to light up.
