My 8 3/4 rear axle housing is bent. I have new axles, center section and brakes. So, I just need a new housing. Anyone know where I can buy one? I don't want to take a chance on another used one.

Thanks FBBO

No one makes an oem style! You'll have to get fabricated one from Moser, Strange etc. They are sheetmetal!

A local salvage yard has used complete rear axles drum to drum for $450. He won't just sell the housing and no guarantees on straightness.

I'm leaning towards a new housing from Moser for $750. Probably another $50 to $100 to ship.

How wide do you need or for what car? I have a couple in the attic and have a checking bar to check for straightness. I have to install an empty center chunk with bearing plugs, slip the bar though and see how the axle bearing plugs fit to determine straightness. How do you know yours is bent....how was it checked?

All factory housing's have some amount of "bend" in them, that's a fact. There is a tolerance that the factory had for the housing's, but it had to do with the axle bearing's more so than the straightness of the housing if that makes any sense.

I need it for my 69 Coronet R/T. It's all stock.

I was at Merle's Frame and Alignment in OKC this morning to get the front end aligned after rebuilding the front suspension. They put the car on one of their alignment racks and a few minutes later came and told me the left rear was out -1/2" and the right was out -1/8". Like this \---/.

I noticed the new axle slid in easy on one side but needed a lot of persuasion getting the other axle in. The axles were hard to turn by hand after they were installed. I also have a noise from the new gears I can't get rid of. I even sent them back to Cass (Doctordiff) once and they still make noise. It all is starting to make sense now.

Mine is out 5/8" like this \---/.

I just spoke to Cass. He said the way the alignment shops check for bent rear housings is by raising the rear of the car, chalking the centerline of each rear tire, then measuring at the front and rear to see if there is a difference.

So, I thin I'll do that before replacing my housing.

To be continued...

Yeah, I've seen some housings that looked like they were way out but so long as the bearing flanges are true and within tolerance, what the housing looks like doesn't really matter. 1/2" is way too far but 1/8" isn't so bad but even so, they can be better than that. If you are experiencing gear whine, you probably have other issues like improper setup on those. Who set them up and do you know if they used a pinion depth tool or just went by gear pattern? The side that's out 1/2" is probably going to be hard on that side wheel bearing....

Cass (Doctordiff) built the center section with all new parts. I don't know how he checks it. But I sent it back once and it still whines about the same.

Well, my greatest fears were confirmed...the front measurement was 5/8" wider than the rear. It's obviously bent out of tolerance. I'll be replacing the housing. Son of a biscuit eater!!

Cranky, how much for a housing for a 69 Coronet R/T? Send me a PM, please.

Since you're already planning for another one, it probably won't cost anything to try to fix it. I know guys who already plan on straightening before the rear end is even used, because of warpage from welding on different mounts. Take a look at these:

Thanks. I wasn't too sure about straightening the housing until I read those forum posts. The alignment shop this morning recommended a guy nearby that straightens housings. I'll give him a call tomorrow and see what he charges.

After taking a quick look late yesterday, I didn't see anything that was marked for the 68-70 B body cars. Let us know how much he wants to straighten it. It's been awhile since selling just a housing but I only got a C note for it....
