Even if its legal for recreational use, its obviously grounds for termination if using on the job. No different than being dunk at work. Tell the boss or call the cops. Operating heavy equipment has to be against the law.

Yep, it would take more fingers than my two hands have to add up the guys at work who failed a drug test and were out of a job... unfortunately most of the tests were AFTER a mishap.

dont get me wrong, all in moderation...
but if you feel you should be high (or drunk) operating heavy equipment (or any job for that matter) you dont deserve to have that job, period.
that shows you're not responsible enough to put it down and take care of your livelihood.
that right there is my only problem with legalizing weed. morons who have no self-control and ruin it for the rest of the populace.

Congrats to the winners of the pro legalization movement. Obviously getting high on the job is akin to drinking on the job...both are irresponsible. To think that legalization will promote irresponsibility is baseless. People smoke weed, drink alcohol whether its legal or not. Some could say that because its illegal it has a cool factor thus making it more desirable. Control, educate, enforce and regulate just like alcohol. Here in Canada the tight a$$ed Federal Conservatives are still brainwashed in their mythical thinking that weed is still to much of a responsibility for us. Jeez, we can't even buy alcohol unless its from a government store.
I agree that weed does make people lazy, forgetful, hungry and can potentially suck the enthusiasm out of ones sole. But being legal or not, its been widely available forever and being legal won't change anyone's personal choice to try it if they want to. Some of the money they save in enforcement should be spent in education.

I'm glad to say the voters of Florida didn't all get duped by the BS the pro-pot crowd tried to sell down here and the initiative to make "medical" marijuana legal failed. 
It was so funny to see the pro-pot tour buses pushing their message of the needs of senior citizens and desperately sick people not at seniors homes or hospitals but at one college campus after another. Yep... lots of old sick, people at those places.
The big problem I have with all these debates is the pro-pot crowd loves to say pot use isn't harmful compared to the use of tobacco or alcohol. They base this largely on their own experiences with pot, which since it is illegal to use, expensive to buy, and can get you arrested or fired for using, people tend to use it very moderately. Most pot users smoke two to five joints a week or less. What happens when users smoke pot like they do cigarettes, say 20-40 joints a day? They have no idea what those effects are even though they could go back and look at Congressional and state legislature testimonies from the 1920s and 1930s that show what the real impacts of widespread abuse of the drug were. But they refuse to look at that data since they can't relate to it. Their experiences of moderate use are totally different, and the standard reply is all that stuff from the old days is just lies.
I really love their use of the argument of pot is bad... but it's less bad than tobacco and alcohol so pot should be legal too! You know, getting punched in the head hurts less than getting kicked in the nuts, so does that mean we should all go out and get punched in the head? Maybe we should look for ways to get hit less instead? But that logic is lost on them, which is why you never ask someone who's addicted to something whether it should be more accessible.

As a former lover of the herb I can say that in my observations that it does do some irreversible damage. I have several friends who never gave it up and over the last 30 years they have dumbed down considerably. Some of them your better off talking to a brick. People will always find a way to get high I personally dont see how legalization of pot other than medicinal purpose will help.

I used to as a social thing. When it came to a vote in Colorado I voted to legalize. I saw too many kids my children's age losing scholarships, getting huge fines for being at a party where someone lit up. I really think the PD was using it as a revenue generator. My two young adult kids voted against legalizing it. They didn't want Colorado to be known as the "Weed State." Which I have to admit it has that reputation now.
There was a drillir on one rig I was on where the driller smoked a joint before tripping out of the hole. He crawned the rig and dropped all the pipe in the hole. Million dollar mistake. The whole crew was fired.

I heard all the pros and cons of legalization. Been there done that. Bottom line is, like it or not .... the tide is turning and as a responsible society we must prepare for it. We can continue sticking our head in the sand, argue about the pros and cons, deny that its a serious issue, point fingers and say its good or bad or we can get ahead of the game and be proactive about the inevitable outcome. Someday weed will be legal everywhere and if we don't respond quickly with education and information we could have regrets.
Who would have thought that the US would be legalizing weed before Liberal Canada?

I digress. Here's the only problem I see with weed. It stays in your body and you can test positive for a month, as where alcohol, and cocaine are water soluble and are out of your body within 24 hours of use.
The good thing about weed is, and I can honestly say this is is that I have never puked from it or screwed a fat ugly chick while stoned!

I am by no means a virgin or rookie when it comes to it. Never have I put myself in the position to be tested or stoned on the job. Now that I have aged some and seen both sides of the debate, I have become totally against it. My reason being...and this is totally mine alone...is that it ruins my lungs. After retirement I began smoking again. I had given up tobacco a longtime ago and was pretty clear in my breathing and lungs. But the time after retirement until August of this year I had had a terrible nagging cough and was spitting up lung butter like no tomorrow. Since then I have cleared up and slowly gained my breathing capacity back. Sleeping a whole lot better too I might add. Both tobacco and pot are smoked although there are now edibles that are more potent and taking the place of smoking. I don't believe any more that it is the right thing to legalize it. There was a reason that it was deemed years ago as a Class A drug and now I can honestly see why. I was a youth of the '60's as so many are. Back then it never occurred to me that it would become such a political thing today. I guess I have become cynical now and I can live with that. But when it comes down to it, when the question is asked, "Can you pass a drug test...Today"? then it is time to either take ones own self responsibility to heart or trip though the light fantastic?

I was a product of the 70's I did partake when in social settings as a young adult,
my personal views is it's no worse than Beer or Booze, if used in the proper setting,
by adults {that should be able to make up their own minds} & not by underage children...
I know or have known far more drunks/or people on PX pharmaceuticals that can't function
{or are a actually functioning alcoholics/drunks, PX pill poppers}
or that are hung over/strung out at work, slow & dangerous,
than people who smoke weed, that are stoned at work...
It's a slippery slope, a conundrum to me, I don't think making it legal,
will help the people that already have any substance abuse problems...
I know way back when I did smoke weed occasionally recreation-ally, many moons ago,
that I could actually function way better stoned/when I was high/smoking weed,
than when I was drinking, especially hard liquor, but I never did it in a work or public setting either...
Neither is a good idea, really
but people want the euphoria feeling of getting away from their troubles,
just like alcohol climbing into a bottle, smoking a joint, it helps do that...
There actually has been some medical benefits derived from pot/THC concentrates
to help seizers in children, allegedly a few other medical benefits,
but it's being used & abused just like the pharmaceuticals are too...
{that's a whole other argument, we could debate}
It's not just the old stuck in the 60's hippies, that partake anymore...
I don't want a POT/WEED dispensary in my city or town either,
mainly because of the element of lazy do nothings dopers/hippies,
that abuse it constantly/can't control themselves {just like the drunks do},
that bad element it brings to the city...
But I also really don't see it being morally any worse than booze/PX's,
even if I don't partake in smoking it at all any more & haven't for years,
as long as it's in a controlled situation, not out in the public setting like in a park, a stadium, bar etc.,
just like booze/alcohol laws & if used properly in the proper setting, by adults...
Like I said I'm torn, I think it should be de-criminalized, but it brings other problems too...

My wife and I were foster parents for 15 years and had 19 kids spread over that time. We speacialized in kids that had been traumatized in one form or another. Every case we had was drug related. From 12year olds dealing to abandoned babies. Im not taking the side of alcohol that is totally different beast. The time and effort spent on getting these kids a chance at another fair shot because of our drug culture in this country is finominal. And yes it is a culture and dangerous one. I dont have an answer for it but I truly believe that this country is headed up the wrong river on this topic.
