inside my shop. Live within the city limits and can't shoot outside so.....is doubled 3/4" plywood enough to shoot #4 shot (not buck shot) into without penetration or should I triple it? Will be shooting from a distance of about 7 yards. Already have 2 bullet holes in my back overhead door from a 9 and a .357 and don't want anymore . The 9mm hole is from a buddy that rapid fired after I told him not to and the .357 is from mine that penetrated. I have a Remington 870 that I've never fired and it's past time and it doesn't look like I'm going out to the country any time soon....

They use the sky around here to shoot into or the lake out back lol. Of course I live in the sticks.

#4's from seven yards will blow a big hole in 2 sheets of plywood I think, maybe even 3

Over do it to be safe. put a piece of 1/4" plate on the back side of the plywood. shooting 2 3/4" shells shouldn't go through 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood.IMHO. Don't sue me if it does though.Lol

Why not build a simple bullet trap that deflects the shot downward into sand?

what if you built a box attached to the back of the plywood? triple up the sheets and make a box i dunno, maybe a foot deep beyond the back of the last sheet to "catch" the slug?

hell if I know. lol either way,

:worthless_thread:

I had a brother that used a phone book and shot with 12 ga in basement of the house. One hell of a sound and bb;s flying every where!

I'm shooting #4 bird shot now....not #4 buck shot. #4 buck is .240 diameter and #4 bird is .130 iirc.

shell has bb's in it....no slug.

Thought about doing that and may still. Don't have much sand laying around tho....

large log?
Nothing around here large enough to capture the pattern. My plywood target is about 24" square.

And I'll take some pics of the carnage lol

This might help , I'll send you my daughters boyfriend, he can hold the plywood for you!

****. I read it wrong. read "not buck shot" and automatically thought slug.

I gotta slow down and actually read stuff before I answer. lol :eusa_doh:

Cranky, I assume you have more bb's in the shell with bird than you would with buck?

Yup, more bb's with the bird shot than the buck shot. The bird shot will do a lot of damage if it's close enough but at 7 yards, the pattern should be wider than the buck shot. May just go to the range with a buddy. He has a membership at an outdoor place but really didn't want to use up an entire afternoon. The place isn't exactly around the corner plus he likes to take half is arsenal lol

Talking from experience here...at that distance the pattern will be about the size of your fist and will blow hell through the plywood.... I suggest using something a bit more absorbent like an old box of magazines about 2 foot thick. Will stop the charge and retain the bird shot. But it won't be as much fun....Just saying. Spook
