The 70 RR is painted and ready for reassembly. I want to go with an overdrive, car was factory 4 speed, I am really liking the T56 6 speed but am wondering if any one has any experience making one fit. I don't mind doing a little cutting , but don't want to redesign entire floor pan. I am looking for helpful info on this Thanks

There are lots of threads on this. Search around. I have a TKO 5 and would consider Gear Vendors next time. Good luck.

I have a thread right here on FBBO on doing just that, it's titled "T56 install" and is in the driveline and motor section. I went with a low mileage Viper tranny (T56) and have listed all of the parts, cost and documented what was necessary to make it fit. The biggest mod is redesigning the torsion bar cross member because "THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THEY WILL FIT WITH THE CROSS MEMBER IN TACT". All of the cutting on the tunnel hump is done at least an inch up from the floor (no cutting on the flat portion of the floor) but it does require cutting just past the fire wall to floor pinch weld. Feel free to check out the thread, I'm sure if you go with a store bought unit things like the bell housing will be different but it should give you a good idea of what's involved.

Just a warning to you, the TKOs are not a bolt in conversion like some state and they don't shift the greatest either. Ask around or just google TKO shift problems and you'll find plenty of links to the shift problems and the cross member needs modified for them to fit correctly as well. Long story short, if your going to cut it up go big and get the Cadillac of standard trannies (T56). But there's also the new Passon 5 speed, don't know much about them except they're an 833 with another gear making them fit allot better (long waiting line).

747 mopar Thanks for the great info, your thread on the T56 Install was very helpful I had no idea there would be that much cutting involved to get one to fit. I also was not aware of all the problems with the TKOs (I was going to order one today) think I will check a little more into the new legend 5 speed overdrive. it's a lot more money but looks like it will fit with no major mods other than different shifter hole & the correct bell housing. I'm also going to check on the passon 5 speed

No problem, they are a pretty fat tranny for sure. I can understand why most wouldn't want to do that much cutting but I just enjoy doing things like that haha. Good luck

Passon has delivery problems. Could take years. Agreed on the TKO shift issues.

Don't know if it matters to anybody but when searching for answers to the shift problems I found that Liberty Gear offered services that supposedly fixes them and makes them shift really well???

I talked to Jamie Passon Friday, he said there is a 9 to 12 month wait on the 5 speed @ $4495 . He has over 400 on order.I ordered one of his hemi overdrive kits. He said they should be ready to ship in a couple of weeks. If the car, including engine compartment was not already painted I`d go with the T56

Should have read my update closer, the price Jamie quoted was $4995.
