I found a 9 1/4 rear end in a 72 Satallite and I don't know much about the 9 1/4. The owner of the car told me it was put in because the car was used for towing and sure enough there's a hitch on the back with a trailer brake controller under the dash.

Would it be a sure grip or did they come with a limited slip? I'm thinking about buying it for car a parts to put my 71 Roadrunner back together. I hear a 9 1/4 is rare and I'm wondering what they go for? I don't think I'd put it in my 71, but I'm thinking if I sell the rear end I'd definitely break even on the car, plus get all the parts I want. I also read the 9 1/4 came out of 72 and up, so i don't want to put it numbers matching 71.

Well,a sure grip is chrysler lingo for a limited slip rear. So that is one and the same. 9 1/4 isnt really a sought after piece. 8 3/4 and 9 3/4 (dana 60) are what people look for. You might have a hard time unloading it

the 9 1/4 rear sure grips were quite popular for police interceptor cars in often a 2.88 ratio...look to the C bodies as they were the popular vehicle among the police forces at the time. I have one of these units here and have retrofitted it and the interceptor engine and tranny ( tranny is first gear lock out so no officer could hold first..) into a 52 Plymouth

Yes they were available with sure grip and they are still available....

Heres a 9.25" SG unit out of my '74 Trail Duster..................

The 9.25 first started in the B bodies some time in 73. Have had several 72's with the 8.75
Plenty of gears and sure grips available for the 9.25 these days. They are a good rear end.

Just bought one a with a 3.21 ratio and sure-grip for my 72 for $500, Ive seen them go for under $300. The way I see it is its somewhere between the 8 3/4 and the dana 60, it bolts directly in our cars and the whole assembly cost as much as most people want for a 8 3/4 LSD alone.

A 9 1/4 suregrip is on my parts list for my 74 charger , I dont think i am the only one. I don't think it will be to difficult to sell especially if you were willing to ship or found someone in your area. Ebay maybe?

Thanks for the info guys. Doesn't sound like I found a pot of gold, but there's value to it. Gotta say, I did learn something new.

The 72 SSP I bought had a 9 1/4 put in it when the 440 was added. I don't know much about the specs on mine, but they are a bit stout.

I have this rearend in my truck. And I DID have the clip breakage. But I cleaned it all out good, left it alone and put in new fluid...that was probably 20k ago. I am not extremely concerned. I'd run one in my car especially if I gave it a good once over first.

I have a factory 9 1/4 3.92 sure grip in my 2000 Dakota R/T.

It gets driven like a truck, with full loads and trailering cars halfway across the state.
(sometimes both)

Also been off road more than a few times and maybe even a few (shhh) street races.

No issues.

I believe there is a "c clip" eliminator available.

These axles can be found in junkyards today, and some have sure grip.

I found another 3.92 SG Dakota R/T axle for $150 including a pair of 17" R/T wheels.

Of course the caveat with the Dak is six lugs, and IIRC the Ram is 5 on 5, but the point is the SG units are out there as well as low gear sets esp 3.55.

Probably likely, but the problems with Daimler era rear ends are not necessarily those found in 70's era builds of that differential.
Exactly, and that's why I include the "3rd Gen Ram" reference in there. Different SG's for sure.
BTW, the SG picture I posted is an earlier one out of a '74. It was repaired by a Chrysler dealer in the mid 90's so it went about 20 years before it broke. Just sitting on a shelf now, lol.

I have a 9.25 in my 73 that works good, i have a set of 410 gears to put in it if i ever get it done but i do think they are a good backside for these old cars...

My 2000 Durango has a 9.25 with the Trac Loc limited slip unit and 3.90 gears and IMO, the LSD unit is a POS. It's a one piece carrier and the clutches are outboard of the side gears. I changed the gear oil at 25k miles when it started making racket and all kinds of gunk came out of it. Cleaned and checked it and refilled with the recommended amount after seeing no visible damage. Didn't get 5k miles on it before it was making even more racket only this time there wasn't very much gunk in it. Cleaned and inspected it and again didn't see any visible damage but this time it got a 1/2 bottle of STP thrown in with the new gear oil. The car now has 99k miles on it and has been quiet ever since and the LSD seems to still be working like it should.
