First off, I'm a newbie and I hope I'm posting this thread in the correct location.

I'm looking to purchase my first muscle car, and I've been looking at 68-69 Coronets and GTX's for the past 6 months. I've been emailing back and forth with the seller, and they are saying this is a numbers matching RT. Based on the condition, am I crazy to think the price is too good? They are asking just over $31k.

Any assistance and guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Roger

Well,
Personally speaking $31K is not a paltry sum.
Very nice Coronet R/T

The BIG thing with these cars is: Essentially, in a "nut-shell" how much will it cost you to bring an "Average" car up to that standard.

This car needs nothing.
But, the flip side is, $31K in this market is considered "Good Money", not cheap.
-Again, I like the car,
-If you like it, then that is all that matters.
It's just that usually "WE" hear the opposite on the forum.
Another words: "Is $31K TOO MUCH to pay for the Coronet R/T ?

is it repainted a lighter shade of green?, doesnt look like it matches the engine bay .......... any repainted/restored car should be inspected thoroughly, there is always risk of buying a bondo buggy

VERY nice paint job, clean engine bay and the interior. With that said, how many of us have shown up to look at a car only to find out the owner was Great at taking photos? Not saying this is the case here...just be aware.

By the photos we cannot see:
- the trunk
- the undercarriage (suspension/ gas tank/ exhaust system/ floors)
- Door or trunk weather stripping
- Window seals (or side windows)
- Drivers door panel
- Headliner
- Is the vinyl top new or original...if original does it need replaced?

By the photos I notice:
- Driver's head rest 'looks like' it was possibly dyed and some black is showing through?
-Original carpet?...is it faded?
-Sun baked horn spokes and steering column?
-Worn/ weathered door lock knobs?
-A rusted A/C line running along the passenger fender?
-Why are the seatbelts 'stacked' in the rear seat...are they faded, or shot?
-Is the radio original or aftermarket?...is the dash cut?

Again, not picking the car apart (looks like a very nice car!), just pointing out items that may explain an asking price lower than what you might expect. As super-bee_ski said, "$31K is not a paltry sum." I personally would want more photos, or better yet see it in person before letting go of that kind of money. Hope it all works out for you! Oh, and welcome to the site...

Dako - Thanks for the things you pointed out. That's exactly what I'm wanting from you all.

super-bee_ski - That's very true.

Since I'm in GA and the car is in Kansas, my plan is to have the car inspected by a professional. I know there are companies out there that supposedly specialize in classic cars. Have any of you used these companies? Or would you recommend a particular company?

Thanks everyone for your responses and help thus far!

Beautiful car. If seen in person and near what is in the pics, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Think what it would cost to put a car in that condition. Fly out and buy it if you like it. AC, Buddy Seat...nice.

not sure i'd sell my r/t for 31 grand. you can't build anything for 30 big ones. if it's what you want, the body is solid, and you've got the dough; go for it. they didn't make that many coronet r/t's in '69.

looks like a nice car. money seams fair if all looks fine in person. but I will add this car is also missing the seat medalions. (not to pick)!

I'd buy it for that if I were in the market today.

If after a thorough ging over the car truly is "Mint" as the link referring to the 68 R/T appears to be then I'd buy it.

Here's Hemmings current valuation:

I used an appraisal service that saved me from a bad purchase. I'll check my records for the name. Well worth $200.

*****3-21-15 UPDATE*****
Sorry, I couldn't find the records. I must have deleted them since I didn't buy the car. It was a 1969 GTX at a dealership that looked good in the photos but after seeing the appraisal photos, reading the appraisal, and talking to the appraiser on the phone I decided not to buy the car.

Most appraisal companies inspect the car top to bottom taking around 50-100 photos. They ask questions about the car's history, maintenance and such and pick at the obvious problem areas. Then, they write up a detailed summary and email it to you with the images attached. Look for a licensed appraisal company. Hemmings has a list. Or, start a new thread about appraisal services.

Good luck.

I bought my car sight unseen, but I live across the other side of a very wide and deep ocean.

This car is across a few state borders. Airline tickets are cheap. Go and see it.

I would say the price is more than fair by what I see in the pictures, but pictures don't always reflect the actual condition of the car. If I were spending that kind of money, I would invest in a trip to Kansas first. :icon_thumright:

car looks awesome. well worth the 31k. does seem low for the looks of it. what can you buy these days for that price and really enjoy it?

I'd do exactly what these guys are saying price seems fair for what we can see I'd fly out myself and look at it though that's a lot of cash . You just don't know what your getting pictures hide a lot ,I just bought my car and it looked fantastic in the pics I get there and I asked how old the pics were they hid a lot but we worked a deal in the end . Maybe someone on here lives around it and could go look at it . Make a new post and ask if anyone's willing to go look
Good luck

Whereabouts in Kansas? If I'm going through, I would be happy to look at it. I have been around them since 1968.
I Live in nebraska

The car looks nice from the photos, and the price is reasonable. And appraisal would be a good idea. Or maybe just contact the owner and see how he feels about having a professional appraiser come over to check it out. If he doesn't like the idea of that then I would see that as a red flag. If he's all for it then maybe it's time for a road trip, that is if you can take the time off.

Seller pulled a Keyser Soze on me and disappeared. Phone calls go straight to robotic voicemail. Website no longer exists. Emails go unanswered. The good thing is that I never gave any money or personal information to him. Very odd.
