horrible noise

Latest update 28 April 2015
0830Hrs PST

-Existing CAM is in GREAT" shape!
-Lifters are like brand ne as is CAM
-RPM range: 1,600 to 5,800
-CAM is a Comp Cam XE268H 21-223-4 280 224 230 @.477

-Torque convertor that came in the trans was a 12" with balance weights
-Flex Plate seems to be for the "Internal Balanced" engine, this is a cast crank engine with external balance

I am ordering a Hughes 11" torque Convertor with a 2,500 RPM Stall
(I was going to go with a 2,000 RPM stall but I think the 2,500 RPM stall would be better suited for the 67 GTX w/ a lightly modified 440)

good luck & have fun ski, sounds like she's coming together

Thanks Budnicks...
I'm wondering about the torque converter
Bob Mazolinni Racing said to go with the 2,500 stall
My Trans guy initially said the 2,000 stall but said yes on the 2,500

I'd personally go with the 2500 over the 2000

Mopar Performance sells a P4876878AB 166k
& a P4876879AB 175k converter for street use
the 175k has more stall speed, the one I've used most often, for larger camshafts
I had decent success with them in the past, inexpensive & lasted great too
for mild performance/street use

I have one 175k that Mikes Trans. in SoCal reworked for me on my shelf, years ago
it'll go in my streetcar eventually

was the engine internally balanced ?
sounds maybe like a mixed batch of parts

I know Mike. he is 35 min away form me.
Anyway, I'm calling Bob Mazolinni Racing this afternoon and ordering the Converter today
Yup, mis-matched parts.
1973 440, cast crank, external balanced.

I'm getting the new 11" Hughes converter @2,500 RPM from him.
As Bob said and you said Budnicks, 2,500 Stall
Also, the correct external balanced flex plate

Thanks Budnicks!

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Bob Mazolinni Racing (Bob)
Ordered the Hughes Heavy Duty 11" 2,500 Stall converter AND the correct flex plate.
Awaiting arrival next week.

"Gonna get this Lil 67 GTX' up and running soon"

PIC soon to come

So,
Did I make a mistake ordering a 2,500 Stall converter over a 2,000 RPM ?

NO not in my opinion anyway, I'd get the 2500, your fine
even if it has a 3.23:1 gear you'll be past that at cruising speeds

Glad to hear your on your way can't wait to not hear the screaming craziness again! :) Where is the **** of this newly rebuilt motor????? what gives here? lmao

Thanks Budnicks.

As you always say: "Fill Your Library, Before You, Fill Your Garage"

PS: bigmanjbmopar, the **** is on the way!

yeah what he said...LOL

we need our car **** !!

Okay, the engine is assembled.
I tried to keep the "build-Price" LOW.
"We" determined that "67satellite" (who I purchased the entire car from and the original poster: "horrible noises") had purchased a brand new Cam from Comp Cams with the lifters and they had no wear on them at all. Under a magnifying glass I inspected each lifter and they looked NEW. As did the Cam.
Also, the engine was torn completely down and sent back to the machine shop, Adams Metalizing, Lancaster CA.
The CAM is a Comp Cam:Xtreme Energy™ XE268H; 1600 - 5800 RPM
Now, it is important to note that 67satellite had the engine re-built in Beaufort, SC and he put less than 200 miles on the engine.

But I had the engine completely gone through again.
Leaving "no stone unturned"

I had the 727 trans completely re-built also.

Here are the pics from Monday afternoon/evening assembly by myself and engine builder/trans expert "Paul" from "Paul's engine balancing and transmissions"

NOTE: CAM is a Comp Cam XE268H 21-223-4 280 224 230 @.477
-Water pump housing: Aluminum housing from Mancinni Racing
-Water pump: Mancinni racing
-Oil pump: Melling (standard not HP)
-Hughes 24-25 / 2,500 RPM (I struggled over this, my builder keeps saying go 2,00RPM but Bob Mazolinni from Bob Mazolinni racing keeps telling me to go 2,500 RPM AND Hughes Converters themselves say to go 2,500 RPM)

Looking great Ski

sounds like your covering all basis's

I'd say "go with the 2500rpm stall also" like I said earlier,
I'd pretty much have to agree with Hughes & Mazolinni

good luck & Happy Moparing

Thank you Budnicks...
In my opinion, I am willing to bet many "Gear Heads" as myself lack a thorough understanding of Torque Converter knowledge.
Bob Mazolinni personally told me that: "if I order the 2,500 stall over the 2,000 stall I will end up calling him and thanking him"
And, the Hughes company tech report did suggest for the 67 GTCX with a mild build-up, better CAM (1,600 to 5,200RPM) the appropriate CAM should be a 2,500.

But the guy helping me build the engine and he did the trans suggested a 2,000 stall!
He said it would give better gas mileage and some other stuff.

So, I'm confused!
I did as Hughes AND Mazolinni Racing suggested the 2,500 (I bought his 1970 Hemi for my Superbee in 2008)
I hope I made the correct choice.
It is NOT a race engine, just a Street Car.

We will know soon...

yeah
you may suffer a slightly worse economy/gas mileage, around town especially,
you don't buy a muscle car for it's mileage thou, especially a carb/BB version...LOL

But IMO/experiences it will be better to drive, better overall drive-ability/manners,
no creep in gear, won't have to stand on the brakes at lights/stop signs
& better launches for the stop-lite to stop-lite blasts, easier to do burnouts,
you get more torque multiplication, with only a slightly higher effective stall speed,
rewarded by feeling more seat of the pants power/performance...

street, cruiser or racer

I like the numbers on that cam, 110 LA too. I guess it only comes in a "one bolt"? Not that it would need three, it's just that i already have a new three bolt roller chain.

What's the name and number of your Weiand intake you have?

Thanks Budnicks and khryslerkid!

The Weiand is a 8009 dual Plane
It came with the 67 GTS ad did the Stealth Aluminum heads with entire valve train set-up.
"Zigs" a fellow forum member is listing in the for sale section a nice set of 1967 915s with big valve mod but I'm staying with the Stealth heads to keep cost down.

The primer I use is Zinc Chromate.
-I primed the Timing cover and oil pump already.
-I chose to run the Milodon Standard Pressure oil pump NOT the High pressure oil pump.

khryslerkid... That cam also comes in a 3 bolt. That's what I have. Called and bought it through Comp directly.
Ski, what lifters did you decide to go with? I was on the fence with this decision. I went with the Pro Magnums. I didn't want to lose to much valve lift with the others.

Sounds to me like the old converter was a stocker. That's how the factory did them for externally balanced engines. All the flex plates looked alike and the converters had weights welded to them. In my first foray into an externally balanced engine, I had no idea about them and installed a 727 trans from a 360 to the back of a 318 and used the whole set up and it vibrated like crazy. I just took a chisel to the weights after finding out what the problem was and it worked.

And I think you'll like the 2500 converter just fine unless you plan on doing a bunch of really slow driving lol
