Timing Locked Out On The Street?

The cam is the only thing making that combo not work. Big cams get you big power, but they are not conducive to street use at all. That particular grind is not a street friendly grind either which hurts even more. IMO - wrong cam choice but definately makes a great dyno number. You have to treat it like a superstocker...lol. Evacs will help assuming the exhaust is free flowing enough, otherwise they will help the idle because of the vacuum leak plugging, but you'll start pushing oil out various weaker gaskets. The Edelbrocks are not calibrated to work with that low of an idle signal. That's why there's no response to the idle screws. Get a modern Holley based carb or carbs for it and you'll be able to tune for it.
600psi over the nose... you should be testing your valve springs once a year at least too. That cam will eat springs in an engine that idles like in a street car.

I appreciate all the advice... I have been talking to the guys at Lunati and they are recommending their biggest Voodoo solid roller.

It's spec'd out at...... 285/293 Advertised, 255/263 @.050 & .600/.600 lift with LSA/ICL @ 110/104

I will be putting this cam in this winter when i park her for the year. It will give me something to do during the long cold North Dakota winter.

But first i need to get all this crap installed!!!! I tend to go a little overboard with the online shopping when i'm out on the platform....haha

What is the intended usage of your beautiful car? Did you explain EXACTLY to the Lunati tech how you are going to use it?

yep sure did..... The guy said that this is the best street/strip cam for my combo. The Voodoo line of cam is designed to give strong low and mid with good streetable vacuum. Taking into mind I have fully CNC'd Indy 360-1 W2 aluminum heads.

i intend on using the car as a serious street/strip car. I'm not home much and this is a fareweather car only so it won't get many street miles.

I agree thats way to much cam for your combo. I run a 440/493 with 10.6 comp and Indy EZ heads and I use a custom solid flat tappet. My cam is 264 & 270 at .050 with .585 & .592 lift and a 110 LSA. I have it in the eng on a 106 ICL and it idles with a nice rump rump lope to it but its a smooth steady idle and its just the way I like it.

I run a PCV system with a PCV valve as it pulls enough vacum to work good. If you have the vacum to work a PCV system I would definetly run it on the street as mine works great. When I go racing I just unhook the PCV and use a breather on each valve cover but I only race about once a year as I do mostly street driving.

I would consider changing that cam for sure. I had Dwayne Porter spec my solid flat tappet as I wanted a cam speced to my combo and Dwayne Porter is one of the best out there on cams. Here is his phone # if you want to call and talk to him. 802-951-1955 He is a nice guy to talk with and can tell you what cam would work best for you.

I have seen a few guys run their timing locked on the street in some strong builds and it seems to work for them. Myself I run a dist with no vacum advance and I have a very fast timing curve as I idle at about 24 degrees and have full 37 degrees timing by 1800 rpm and it runs good on 92 pump gas as I built good quench in the eng. Good luck with it , Ron

Thanks Ron,

yes the the cam is gonna go. I have been in contact with Ryan Johnson at Shady Dell Speed Shop Shop. He's the small block guru. He also recommended a custom cam. The specs he said were pretty close to what you're running now. He also said I need to bump up my compression a bit and do a lil more head work. So, I'm tearing the engine down next week and sending him my stuff. He said after the cam and head work, I'll be pumpin out about 720hp.

I've heard of Dwayne. I'll havta check him out too. Thanks for the tip.

Just another opinion, but I've built a lot of engines in the past 50 years and have yet to see a 700 horse engine with good street manners. The exceptions, of course, are engines with power adders. That's why you see so many turbos, pro-chargers and superchargers today. They idle like stockers, get pretty good mileage and go like stink if built right. Not saying it can't be done, but is it more fun to be working on it all the time or DRIVING it? Food for thought...

Couldn't agree more!

Mike Finnigan's Blasphemi has pretty good street manners. Seen the car in person. 535ci hemi with 700+hp 700+lb ft n/a with Hilborn efi. Hooked to a 6 speed manual. He just supercharged now it's got 850+hp and 690hp at the wheels cool ride.

call me goofy but I actually enjoy working on it. Anything is streetable, it all boils down to how much you want to put up with. I can handle unfriendliness on the street, I just don't want it to die at idle and want more low/mid power.

That is a large pile of stuff there...lol
Ryan's good. Personally I think Dwayne's better but that's just me. The 496 (B wedge) I built last year has Ryan's heads and Dwayne's cam. Currently making 450+ to the tires with fatory exh manifolds. Trust them both!
