Hawk's Cross Country 70 Road Runner Trip

Enjoy your trip... I hope to be doing something like this soon!!

What an awesome trip! The destination points you picked are incredible. I've taken my kids to Grand Tetons/Yellowstone twice when they were young enough to want to hang out with Dad. Cruising through Yellowstone in a 70 RR is going to blow people's minds!
When in Jackson, WY stop in at the Million Dollar Saloon for a drink - it's on the main drag across from Antler Park.

I know I'm reaching way ahead but as you're winding up your trip we need to schedule a NorCal FBBO shindig either Thurs in the Bay Area or Friday at my house depending how late you get in.

Million Dollar Saloon sounds interesting, and I am sure we will have worked up a thirst after a lot of hiking around Yellowstone! I'll add that to the list of possibilities.

I'd love to participate in a NorCal FBBO shindig - I'll do my best to wash the bugs and 5000 miles of dirt off the car! At this point, we may be able to do Thursday as well, although Friday may be the safer day. As we get closer, we'll see how we are doing on our schedule. A lot can happen, but hopefully we will not be slowed up by any issues or problems. If scheduling works out best for Thursday, put it together and we'll be sure to be there!

We fly home from Sacramento.

Thanks for the note. Unfortunately we are going through Kansas City and then over to Denver.

[*]Mon 9/14: Explore St. Louis, then head towards Kansas City
[*]Tue 9/15: Head to Dodge City thru Tall Grass Prairie park

Hawk,

If you are taking I-70 across Kansas, you will pass right by the town of Ellis, KS. That is where Walter P Chrysler was born. They have turned his boyhood home into a local museum. http://www.chryslerboyhoodhome.com/index.asp

If you call ahead, the lady who runs it will likely make a special concession should you arrive outside their normal hours. Just another point of interest on your trip.

Cool. We are currently planning on heading through Dodge City, which looks like it might be an hour south of the museum. This might be a cool addition to see if we can adjust our route to check out. Thanks for the tip!

Have some big fun on your trip and be safe.
I'll be keeping a eye on your updates.

Good luck Hawk, I've made some long voyages and it's a cool experience doing it in a classic Mopar not to mention the satisfaction in knowing you build the car that is hauling you thousands of miles. Enjoy

Take good care. Be safe. And enjoy the trip. Enjoy the reason for the season in your life. Gods Speed.

Have a nice trip, should be interesting to say the least...

Good luck, hopefully it's uneventful for the car/ride/driving part anyway...

"Day -1" and "Day 0"

First I will add my precursor trip from yesterday to see Mark (who did the bodywork on my car). Ever the perfectionist, he noticed my driver side hood corner was sticking up a bit and he instantly got out a wrench and we adjusted that - now it fits much better! I have a couple of minor bodywork issues from the build, but we agreed to leave those go and tackle those after the trip. This way, we can clean up any other "road rash" that might occur on the trip. While there, we ran across one of his friends who has a great old truck that Mark did in 1999. So we got a couple of shots. Great day - Mark, thanks for your hospitality! :headbang:

So I am calling the first milestone of our trip across country "Day 0" since we are not officially leaving until this upcoming Saturday the 5th. However, today Barry and I drove EAST to Stone Harbor, NJ so we could get the critically important shot of the car with the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Of course, the bookend shot will be a picture with the Pacific Ocean.

We met our friend Michael for breakfast and then headed up and parked on one of the dunes in Stone Harbor. Here are a few shots of our trip:

I also want to say welcome to a number of coworkers, friends and family who have been given this link to follow along on our trip. This internet site is For B Bodies Only, or "FBBO". For those of you unfamiliar with these old cars, Chrysler made a midsize body platform that shared many components; as just one example, Dodge Chargers and Plymouth Road Runners.

OK. Now back to frantic packing, planning, work stuff, etc. to get ready!!!

Have a great trip. I envy you. Nice that you're starting the trip from my home state. The Jersey Shore is awesome. Maybe one day I'll have the time to do a trip like yours.

Sounds great - I am always up for some good food! I bet I'll be eating a lot of burgers and fries on the road, so finding good places with some alternatives will be great.

Day 1

Well, we started our trip today!!!

We still have some pictures on the good camera, but for now, here are a couple of cell phone pictures:

Here is a shot of the "Dads and Lads" just before departure.

My Mom brought over a great card to send us off on our trip (both Barry and me are turning 50 this year).

We drove up the PA Turnpike (476) and then jumped on PA route 6. Route 6 is a scenic drive that was really nice. Here is a panoramic shot taken from the side of the road.

We finished our day in Geneva, NY, which is on Seneca Lake in NY. Had some beer, wine and a great dinner.

Tomorrow we head for Niagara Falls...

When in St.Louis, Ted Drewe's is a must, In my opinion. Best Frozen Custard in the world.
And hold on to your nads when you go thru KC,Mo. Good God, worst pavement in the world. All of I -70 sucks. Enjoy trip, curious how mpg will be.
