Title says it all, I have a MSD ignition box and a Pro Billet Distributor. Because the Pro Billet doesn't have a vacuum advanced I'm worried about my fuel economy? Is it worth buying a new Distributor or should I use the Pro Billet?

I was looking at the HEI systems. I want to use my Ignition box, but I want Vacuum advanced. What Shall I do!

I use 6al and pro billets in about every motor I build, I have switched them from stock ignitions and always noticed an INCREASE in fuel economy, never the opposite, now comparing them to a plug and play, I don't know what kind of increase to tell you to expect, probably not enough over a few years to pay for the distributor.

Properly setup carb and pro billet will serve you well for fuel economy, imo anyway..

Alright, so when I set up my Pro billet for the curve, what would suit for the best timming?

As of now I have a terrible Stall converter all in at 1800-2000 So should I put the curve at 2500? Or 3000?

Thanks,

jake

black bushing, blue spring and silver spring (the light ones). Should be good there.

Black bushing would only give me 18 degrees on top of my 12 initial?

Wouldn't I want silver at least for 25 + 12 = 37-38 Degrees total?

Don't know which box you have but if its a 6 series you can connect it to hei.

If it were me, I would do the following.

Figure out at what total timing there is detonation and then back it off 2 degrees from there.

Figure base timing using a vacuum gauge and adjusting the timing (and carb) for best idle. (My guess is that yours is not with a crazy cam so it will not end up way high so 12-15 will be fine. If it needs something 18 or higher, larger bushings than MSD makes may be needed- FBO makes some that go 10 and 14 degrees. I believe if you are very high on timing you will also have to make sure it doesn't kick back on starting.

Once the total and initial timing are set, start with the light springs that bring in the total in early and see if detonation occurs. If it does, then I would work my way up through bigger and bigger springs until there was no detonation.

Black bushing ,1 heavy silver,1lite silver works for me 18 degrees at idle 975 rpm,all in at 36 degrees, 3,000 rpm

I use a Mallory race type dist with no vacum advance also. I got it for a great deal so I went with it. My eng is a 440/493 stroker and it is a pump gas eng as I run 92 pump in it and it has 10.6 comp with aluminum heads and good quench. I run 37 total timing all in by 1800 rpm and it has no ping at all as I run a full exh out to the rear of the car. The car runs great. Do I get good gas milage. Well I feel if I am really worried about that then I am in the wrong hobby. My car has 4.30 gears and a Dynamic 9.5 converter that flashes about 4200 at the track. I run a Holley 850 DP and to be honest I have no idea what my real milage is. I can tell you my old 440 with the same dist got about 12 miles to the gallon on normal driving and that eng pushed the car to an 11.49. I would guess now with the 493 and the same ign I get about half of that milage as I had to jet up a good bit with this 493 eng. But the car runs awesome on the street and track and when I go racing at the track I dont change a thing I race it just as I drive it. Ron

I have only heard good things about Firecore myself. Ron

Firecore was highly recommended so I bought one for myself and it's been flawless the past year I've had it in. I researched Firecore before buying and all I found was good reviews. I am curious as to what problems blinkey has had and what he has heard others say.
