my 440 is give or take a little, a hundred hp over stock, whats the next coldest champion plug available, I checked their site but it wasnt clear, the letter changed from j to y but it still has the same temp range as the stock plug, I'm going to use the oem champion around town and go to a colder plug when I'm racing

I have found those Champions to be way too hot if you have any compression in it at all. Put some NGK-8's in it.

The lower the number the colder the plug.

I haven't tried them lately but there was a whole thread on here about what junk the Champions have become. Cracking etc.... I would also go with something different. Heard Bosch was a good plug.

"J" stands for 14mm-3/8" reach. "Y" means projected tip. the number is the heat range. the j11y in an iron head covers a multitude of scenarios, plus it was designed for the mopar head. j10y is the next coldest but the projected tip isn't as long, same for the j12y. any plug can have the porcelain cracked due to poor installation.

lewtot184 i wish you would elaborate more on spark plug choices. all of us can benefit.

be glad too, but i'm not sure what specifics your looking for. i keep things fairly simple. no brand loyalty issues. anymore more i look at the tip, how it fits in the chamber/piston and measure the depth of the porcelain to determine heat range. look at the strap for timing and look at the rim for air/fuel. no substitute for just pulling the plugs out and giving them a real good eyeballing.

You could still run an 8 with 10.5CR but a 7 will be fine too. Those RC12YC's everyone runs are just too hot.

I believe the problem with Champion is they dont make the 10's and 11's no more as I think they give you the 12's which is what they replace the colder plugs with. Thats one reason I dont use them anymore. I run either Autolite of NGK and both work good for me. Ron

letote my need is for a version II Hemi Street mtor with 9.75 compression storker 472 looking for a good mid point plug to start with
a hemi head will need a 14mm-3/4" reach plug and depending on dome (hopefully the stroker pistons have a short dome) a projected tip. originals were champion n9y but some folks used 11 and 12 heat range. i'd try something simple first, like an autolite 3924. they're easy to find, similar to a champion 11 heat range. to my knowledge the old 13/16 hex N series plugs aren't made anymore, but you may want to check on this to be sure. don't get lost in brands just find the right fit for what your doing. lastly, dont try to use some "magical" plug or "souped-up" ignition to mask a poor tune-up, it'll never work.

here's another question, do you go hotter or colder with aluminum heads?

for street driving with RPM heads i've found hotter works fairly good for what i'm doing. really depends on all the variables.

Champion plugs are twice the money as an NGK
Not worth it imho
