Would like to get some input from you 71 and 72 Satellite owners as to a nice wide and tall 17" or 18" wheel/tire setup on the rear and a somewhat smaller and shorter 17" or 18" wheel/tire combination on the front. Don't have a lot of ground clearence in the front due to 8 quart oil pan and headers. Don't want the rake to be too great but noticable. Very concerned on wheel backspacing as I don't want anything extremely tight. Running 3.91 rear so taller tires will not harm performance. Would be especially interested to hear from those that are actually running a combination that I'm trying to define.

Thanking you in advance

Sorry, I don't have any experience with anything but 15" wheels and tires. But because these can be quite expensive, I would recommend getting a fitment tool like Percy's wheel-rite. I got one from Year1 but I waited until they had it for 30% off. I, like you, have a 3.91 rear in my 73 with offset hangers and narrower rear. I wanted tires that were both tall and wide to fill that fender well but still love my old aluminum slots. I'm pretty sure American makes them in 17" but no wider than 8" or 9" wide. I, personally like a tall sidewall as I hand mount the tires and a really low profile makes this very difficult. I realize that low profiles can handle much better but I am not racing these days. Good luck in your quest and thanks for the pictures of and info about your spoilers. (Do you have any side close-ups of the rear one?)

I'd love to help but as you can see mines a 69, they're 18X8s and 19X10s both with zero offset. Sorry

Damn is that a gorgeous ride!! Saw pics on your other post and am impressed, love it!

I have 17 inch Magnum 500's on m 72 SSP. 17x8 4.5 backspace for front wheels with 245 17's.
For the rears I have 17x9 5.25 backspace and tire size is 255/50/17's. Hope that helps a little. I could go a little wider tire on back. All suspension is bone stock.

Currently I'm running 235/60/15 which gives me a 25.5" tall tire was hoping to get something that would add a 1.5" to 2.5" or more to the rear . Would like to get that rear setting a little higher without suspension mods plus it's a cheap way. Only reason I wanted to go with larger rims is that it makes the car look like it is setting lower. Just an optical illusion BTW, don't want any taller tire on the front just a larger rim for the illusion of a lower nose. Thanks for your numbers it does help. Good looking 72 RR

Ditto for your 69. What is that graphic inside the stripe? Just can't make it out.

Here's a little tool that will help give you an idea of what wheel/tire combo you will want. - http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp - You can plug in the specs on your current combo and then jack with the sizes to see what you need to do to get what you want. It helped me a lot.

I just replaced the 17" Torque Thrust 2's I had with these wider 17" Cragar SS's. My specs probably won't help you since I was going for more of a leveled out look as opposed to having a raked stance. I like mine to look low and flat. If you want that raked look, I think you'll end up having to do the 17 front, 18 rear that you mentioned, and you're going to have to do tires with a taller sidewall than mine.

I think with a little time searching and figuring (using that wheel/tire calculator) you will be able to figure out what you want. Then the hard part comes in... Deciding on what brand and style wheel you're going to use. Then have fun finding a vendor with that style in the size you need. Then enjoy every minute of trying to find a matched set of the tires you want in the size you want, haha. The toughest decisions while building my car has concerned the wheels and tires. Luckily for me, I have another 72 to put my take-off TT2's on... Hope that helps a bit. Good Luck!

Wow, beautiful Bird!

Great looking 72 and I really like that color. Was that a factory color? Those 17s make the front end look lower just as I suspected. What did you end up with as far as tire sizes and back spacing. Backs look tight. No offsetting hangers are there? Appreciate your info Magnes.

Thanks for the compliments fellas.

To answer your questions:

It is a "factory color" but not for that year or for that model, haha. It's the Dodge orange that they've used on the newer Challengers, Chargers, Vipers, as well as a few Jeeps and Ram trucks. I think it has a couple different names but is most known as "Header Orange" when it was used on the 2012-14 Challengers and Chargers.... My car was originally Rallye Red and I'm just not a "red" kinda guy. The Hemi orange just looks red to me as well, so that wasn't an option for me. I needed an orange orange. I think it works well with the white. It's different. Glad you like it.

And yeah, the front looks lower but because of the 40 series tires, so the overall height of the front 17" wheel and tire is about 2 inches less than stock with 14" wheels and 75 series tires (example: 215/75/14 = 26.7" tall. My fronts are 245/40/17 = 24.7" tall. My rears are 275/40/17 = 25.7 tall). I used BFG's all around. 245/40ZR/17's up front. 275/40ZR17's out back. I believe I'm running 4.5" backspace all around even with staggered front and back wheel sizes because of a little negative offset in back. It's not as tight as you might think. There's room for more tire if you can find the right tire. I did not do any modifications to the car for the wheels and tires to fit.

All this wheel stuff comes down to personal preferences... How do you want to do your wheels and stance? Then it's a matter of FINDING what you want. I can't stress how tough that can be. I wanted these wheels to begin with but last year when I was searching, these wheels were on national back order with an estimated 6 month or more wait. So I got the American Racing Torque Thrust 2's, but I couldn't get them in the exact sizes I wanted. Close, but it just wasn't exactly right to me. Anyway if you want a more raked look like you said before, you've got your work cut out for you. Not that it's hard but it just requires a lot of checking, measuring, planning, searching, and (once you place your order) hoping (that they fit like you wanted). Haha.

Or you could just take the car to a wheel shop and tell THEM what you want and let THEM figure it out. That's probably the most sure-fire way.

Taking it to a tire shop wouldn't be any fun like the excitement of ordering a couple of grand's worth of tires and wheels then sweating bullets for weeks and weeks not knowing whether it is all going to fit or it will all be put on Ebay for 1/2 what you paid. Just kidding, Looks like a 255/60/18 with a 5.5 offset on a 10" rim will be the ticket for the rear and 245/45/17 with a 4.5 offset and a 9" rim should be okay for the front. BTW - great choice with the color.

Took me months to spend that couple grand too. I know exactly what Magnes is talking about.
That calculator is invaluable. Ive been using it for years. The fender lips on these cars is about 1" deep, so getting the rubber to fill the fender isnt easy, if youre looking to do that. The wheel wells are huge, front and rear.
I actually used hubcentric wheel adapters on the rear to bring my rears out even more. And it took many hours to find the exact fitting adapters online, which is an absolute must. You cant settle for anything close.
If you need details on the exact adapters, let me know. It will save you a lot of time and money.

Thank you very much. Never gave a thought to adapters, I'll take a little schooling from you. What were the rim widths. I guess I'm doing what you are doing except wanting to use a taller rear tire. More of your thoughts please.

Nose looks a little lower and tall rear tires helped with the rake. Do you think I got the look I was after? Appreciate your input.

Could not find the 265/50/18 in a tread design that I wanted so I settled with 255/55/18 29" is mighty tall.

The car looks great! A very nice stance also. Thanks for posting! I wish that we could zoom in on these pictures like windows photo viewer does!!!

MIght try cutting and pasting into something like PC Paint then explode

currently running 18" 26" tires all around, on 9.5" rims +15 offset. I'm also running 3/4" hubcentric wheel adapters all around to push the rim out more flush. I believe you could easily get away with 10-11" rims with no problems, no mini-tubing for me.

I should mention I cut out the rear lips on the inside by 1/2" for more clearance
