At truck washes, they use a spray on-wash off acid to clean and brighten aluminum. It works very well . If left on to long before washing off, it will leave a white finish. Does anyone know what kind of acid this is , and if commonly available? Thanks for any input............................MO

Can't remember the name of it, but Napa usually carries it. Mild acid spray, maybe potassium acid.

For some reason, several times, my post has disappeared. I know that several viewed it , and Miller answered it before it vanished. So, I will run it thru again...........................MO

Check Napa for a spray bottle...think it's called Brite-dip, or aluminum brightner. Some other parts houses might carry it, too.
I used it on my 727 housing.

The Acid is called hydrofluric! It is available at detailer suppliers. This is a dangerous product. usually sold in a concentration of 2% Acid 98 percent DI water. It will etch glass and also will enter the skin and attack human bone. be very careful Rubber neoprene gauntlet gloves and eye protection. Spending 30 years in Chemical industry one of 5 most feared products in high concentrate.

1. Hydroflouric Acid.
2. Benzene
3. Chlorinated Solvents "MEK" paint Stripper
4. Toluene.
5. Tri Chlor ethene 111

Not being a smart ***, but did you mean "hydrochloric" ? Never heard of hydroflouric. Our old car wash would do alloy wheels for $10 a car. Really worked good, well worth it.

72Fourspeed it is Hydroflouric! When you mention Hydrochloric your also talking about Muriatic Acid used to accelerate by heat the calcium or magnesium Mineral with heat release.

Hydroflouric is an acid that etches glass and dissolves aluminum oxide "oxidated aluminum"

What cornpatch is looking for was also used to clean aluminum food grade containers. Apparently there is a safe way to neutralize it.

Leearn something everyday. I honestly had never heard of that one. Good info, thanks.
#3 worries me. I was/am around Methyl Ethyl Ketone everyday. Gotta re-read that MSDS again.

Thanks, but that can't be the same stuff. All truck washes use it and the workers don't have any breathing or skin protection. It is however , low pressure spray on , and then wash off after just a short time..............MO

Back in the 90's I used to buy that stuff to brighten my aluminum slots. I still remember the smell of it, as I can attest that it will leave a white, chalky residue (if I recall the bottle warned that it would pit the aluminum if left on really long / not thoroughly rinsed.

I used to work with hydroFLOURIC, and I just can't see this stuff being that, but who knows?

This stuff is described as 'truck stop acid wash'. Sounds like the same stuff.

If you have a heavy duty truck parts supply store neer you they will have it. Trailmobile sells it in gallon jugs and I believe it says trailer wash on the bottle. Remember it must be diluted it only takes a couple of ounces of acid to twelve ounces of water to make a very effective cleaner. I use it on my wheels just before polishing.

Cornpatch Hydroflouric has no odor, and they prolly mix it at 1/2 percent or .5 to 1 ounce gallon water.
