1987 shelby charger project

OK before the stones start to fly yes I'm seriously trying to get away from the project side of the hobby before my back surgery gets here. But.....
I couldn't pass this deal up ,I've wanted one of these since I was a kid I still remember the day when a blue Shelby charger blew my dads doors off I was amazed I asked what it was and he said I think it's a mustang well being young very young I didn't know any better so I wanted a mustang. One day my dad brought me to a car show and there my "mustang" was I went and insulted him right away telling him how cool his mustang was . He corrected me and explained that mopars are the gods of the car world and I should never waist my time with anything else other then a mopar . He then proceeded to talk my father in to going for a ride in the Shelby he wanted it to stick in my head and boy did it ever I remember the thing was like a rocket ship (yes I know it's slow as can be) but back then we rolled in a Mazda 323 so yeah rocket ship. I still remember that car and the old man to this day we actually still talk (his Shelby is long gone now )
But I came across my very own and the price was right (extremely right) (yes I actually payed real money for it ) (yes I might be insane) but I don't care I've always wanted a Shelby charger since that ride and now I have one . So what to do with it??hmmmm?
I got nothing! What do you guys think?
Here's a few things bouncing in my insane head .
1:Stock build just get it running use it to practice my painting skills (non as of now) and just drive the hell out of it .
2: build a bad as motor bigger turbo and leave it as it sits 100% ugly and then proceed to scare woman and children
3:Find and buy a 91 Mitsubishi gaunt vr4 there awd 4cly turbo 5 speed. The wheel base is very very close to the Shelby ,so I was thinking of grafting the awd system under the Shelby and using the better motor and trans setup and make a track car for the scca or just a sweet driver.
But nothing is going to happen till I get fixed it will sit in my storage lot covered as not to get worse . I really don't know what to do I had 2 offers on it today a few guys wanted it . I told them no not yet maybe in a month who knows with me .
So what do you guys think I know it looks rough but it's actually very solid only rust is the deck lid and a bubble on the driver 1/4 that's it. The motor turns free gas smells like varnish .I don't know I drove 3 hours each way to get this dirty girl I would love to just drive it atleast to a few shows maybe get a kid interested in something other then a turbo Honda. They can relate with the Shelby being it's a turbo 5 speed ,then you add the cool factor then the mopar following . And if I build the hell out of it ,there will be the small detail of me destroying them all .

Boy, she has seen some better days. Nothing wrong with turbo Mopars. They are right at 2500lbs and came stock with 146hp and a 5 speed.

I use to have an 87 GLHS that I had modified so I know what is involved in getting them to run. Granted that was 10 years ago but everything should be about the same.

I would find a 2.5l turbo motor and go from there. Wire the engine up for SMEC so you can get it chipped and use a 3 bar map sensor. 18psi is pretty easy out of these. Of course Super 60 injectors, intercooler, bigger turbo, bigger exhaust, and some head work with a decent cam.

If you can, ditch the 525 5 speed. I broke several as they are not very stout. The 523 has the better case and cable shifted. 555 and 568 are the performance trannys but are harder to find and more expensive.

Get slicks because 1st and 2nd gear will burn the tires down to the lugnuts. I had a blast in mine but the rust monster tore it up and it had to be scrapped. I still have some parts for it.
 
I would not touch the body until you absolutely had too... Perfect sleeper,...

Just finished scrubbing it off but it started to rain so it's still a bit wet as soon as I can get some pictures I will
 
Oh and I don't think I'll touch the body at I think I'll hide a roll cage in the car ,toss the un needed interior and make a cool sleeper
 
Yeah but I wanted a heap this time makes it not matter what I do if I start with a nice ride I wouldn't want to modify that and I love when people make fun of said car then get raped in a street race by a p.o.s.
That and what I want to do I might not be able to complete or do and I rather scrap a heap then a nice car
 
No stone throwing here as I love my little turbo sleeper, this thing can put a smile on your face real fast

I remember just turning 19 and taking one for a ride at the dealership. It was the fastest car I had been in at that time. I wanted that car but couldn't get the financing. To this day I still want one. They were just cool. Live your dream dude and don't take hater crap from nobody. :)
 
I had a buddy that had one they are a blast in tight corner roads
 
You don't see too many garnet red ones.

Very few mods on a stock build should put you at low 13's or better in the 1/4 mile.

Biggest problem with those is keeping them running and not breaking the trans or shifter parts.

Keep a spare brain (maybe two, and every other electronic part you can find) in the trunk.

Keep a box full of shift cable clips and bushings (booger bushings are better replacements).
 
I've been looking for a donor 91 gallant vr4 I decided if I can get my hands on one of them or a gsx eclipse or talon I will build the car with the awd system and the newer 4 cly turbo motor and trans (much better drive line and cheaper to get tons of h.p. out of them .purity much I'm just using the Shelby charger s body and a few interior parts a 12 sec street car will be cool and fun I've seen these newer motor trans setups with a bit of money in them going 10 sec in the 1/4 I actually have a friend with one that is low 10's I'm kinda hoping to raid his garage and take his left over parts that he's upgraded from to keep cost down. We'll see like always when I get something cool I need money my wife's bugging me to sell the car . I told her no she said fine sell the 72 or the 47 Buick we need money so I guess if I can't come up with some kind of money asap I might post it for sale sadly paying our bills is more important then a toy I guess .

I think you will find a mitsu drive train at least as and potentially much more problematic than the Mopar 2.2/2.5 with very minimal if any performance advantage, if built properly.
