How do you tell the difference between a 383 & 440?

As said before the paint color is not a good indicator. The color varied by make, model, year, option group. The clear difference is the pad on the driver side of the block near the distributor. All 440's have this pad, low deck 383 or 400's do not.

I didn`t read all the posts on this, got boring real quick. in 1969 , I bought a new coronet RT, had a turquoise 440 h.p., 4 speed in it straight from the factory. ''IF IT HELPS"

Thanks for the info! Wasn't sure if the block size was the same but the cylinder walls were a different size. Same for the intake manifold ports.

FYI, a 440 intake will not fit a 383 and vice versa.

No the intake ports are the same as the heads are interchangeable, the problem why they intakes are different is that the 440 is a raised block and when the heads are bolted on the block they are farther away from each other compared to a 383 and the other B blocks . So a 440 intake is wider than a 383 . That's why they are not interchangeable .
