So, my 69 GTX arrives monday.....
I have never had a 60's muscle car....

what oil do I use in the 69 GTX?? 5w30?????

what gas do I use, leaded or unleaded?????

If it's a flat tappet cam make sure it has enough zinc and phosphorus in it . It's referred to as zddp and you can buy it seperate as a additive if the oil you prefer doesn't have. Just Google zddp and you will.learn a lot. As far as fuel if it has never been apart then it does not have hardened seats and should use leaded fuel and there additives for that as well. That said I've never used leaded fuel and never had any issues. I'd use a good 10w30 for a stock 440. I used Rotella T6 full synthetic in my 69 GTX it's supposed to have enough zddp in it and it's cheap

Lots of opinions here. I use pump super 91 the best we can get here. Motor was rebuilt about 9 years ago. Also running Amsoil Signature Synthetic 10-40 motor oil. Has high zinc in it. Wix or Napa Gold oil filter.

How many quarts of oil??

Stock pan, 5 quarts.

Do yourself and your car a favor and try using AvGas (aviation gas). You can get it at any local airport that has piston engine planes. 100 octane; low lead; no ethanol; engine will run like it has never run before. I use it 100%. Some mix it with pump gas. 50/50 but 100% during winter storage if you deal with that.
Try it you'll like it.

This reply is based on your car having near-to or stock heads (non-hardened valve seats), compression ratio, flat-tappet lifters. Regarding valve seats, a fuel or fuel additive that will address not having lead in fuel commonly available, and a minimum of 91 octane non-ethanol gas or use MARINE Sta-Bil if you have to use ethanol laced fuel. I use Valvolene VR1 in both of my classic muscle cars, 20/40 in winter and 20/50 the other 9 months of the year (south Louisiana). It has zinc and moly to protect the cam and lifters. There are also zinc moly additives you can use. AvGas not a bad idea, but I would suggest a 50% blend.

i have access to 110 unleaded race fuel....might be 109

FYI, I use 91 octane non-ethanol gas most of the time, MARINE Sta-Bil when I have to use 93 octane ethanol laced gas. I have used 109 octane leaded Sonoco Turbo Blue and 100 octane AVGAS. Seems to run just as well on all of it.

congrats...this was a dealer in fla...I recognize the model. did you go see the car before you bought? if not, make sure it's all good before putting money into it. good luck!

I've run 91-93 since they were the only available...10-1 compression...Bradd Penn oil for flat tappet cams...I run 20-50...472 Hemi

Royal Purple, I use it in my A833 tranny, manual steering box, Dana 60 rear end and engine. Great stuff !
Also, you can use high temp diesel oil, I use synthetic on all my vehicles.

9:5.1. Depends on the tune.

Use 100% gas (no ethanol); Unleaded is what most of us use. http://pure-gas.org/

Use Brad Penn or Amsoil 10W30 or 10W40 oil (depends on your lowest ambient temps), unless your engine has a roller cam then use a good synthetic oil.

BLACK88 congrats on the new ride . question, did you get any records(paper work)with the car ?, can you contact previous owner and ask him or her what gas and oil they used to maintain this car? what are the details of the engine?
until you know these answers play it safe
oil with zink such as valvoline VR1/ brad penn (weight based on climate)
Gas highest octane pump gas you can find 91,93, and use a lead additive.
you can add octane booster if it pings on 91,93

No one can answer the question with any degree of certainty, because no one knows how your engine was built (heads, exhaust valve seats, bearing clearances, compression, roller cam or flat tappet, etc). We don't even know what oil pan is on it. You could put 5 qts of oil in it and still be 3 qts or more low.

You have opened the proverbial can of worms, so I will not offer my opinion on fuel or oil.
However, I have found on my Road Runner ( 432 stroker ) & 454 Corvette that many problems with fuel & lower octane are eliminated by upgrading to state-of-the-art ignition systems. My preference has been MSD ignition, 6al box & coil. These computerized ignitions are far superior to either points or the original Chrysler electronic distributor. Pinging in the 454 was eliminated. PLUS. you don't know if you're actually getting the higher octane you selected at the pump. The are gas stations pumping regular from high test tanks.

About 10 years ago they discovered in Tucson one chain of gas stations was not selling premium; it was closer to 89 octane. The story quietly went away.
As for the ZDDP, I heard on a Podcast once a Valvoline engineer being interviewed, and she claimed that "MAX LIFE" had a formulation that was equivalent to ZDDP.
Does O'Rielly, or AutoZone sell the ZDDP additive?
