Hello,

In order to keep my '73 SSP project $$ contained, I want to keep the 8 1/4 pumpkin, but ditch the open for a posi. Will this carrier take a 3.23 or 3.55 ring gear?

Who's gone this path and who did you buy the posi from? Have you seen this article: http://www.dippy.org/forum2/index.php?topic=75.0

BTW, I know the 8 3/4 is more preferable, but I'm not gonna get into the cost of switching brakes, axles, etc. The 8.25 stays.

Any after market 8 1/4 sure grip unit will accept 3.23 or 3.55 gears, the sure grip unit acts as your carrier, auburn makes a decent piece for a fair price.

The Chevrolet 8 1/2" ring gear axle was also called a 10 bolt. They were available with or without Positraction/Posi.
The 8 1/4" Chrysler built axle is rarely called a 10 bolt. Not sure why. It was available with or without Sure Grip.
Each automaker used specific names to describe their own limited slip differential. Ford had a Traction-Lok, Detroit Locker. AMC called theirs Twin Grip. Pontiac? Saf-T-Track. My 2007 Ram 1500 has what they called "Anti-Spin".

How many splines are the axles on my car, 27 or 29? I can keep these axles going from an open carrier to a SG, yes?

29 spline axles started towards the end of the '96 model year. Your axles will fit whatever sure grip that matches your spline count. At some point they actually increased the ring gear size to 8 3/8"(in the 90's) but it's still called an 8.25. The gears are interchangeable.

WHAT? no rude comments about the "posi" statement? you guys must have more class than the a body guys ! they always got to hammer someone for using the word posi in a mopar discussion. ----LOL

I know it as a Sure Grip, but my company's feedback says I need to embrace diversity.

Well he could use an 8.25" trac-lok out of a mid '96 or earlier Jeep XJ also.

Rt man, when you get this sorted, can you please do a write up about your swap? I would also like to put a decent sure grip into my 8 1/4
