As you can see in the subject box I haven't started fired up my GTX in over a year (Due to illness) I intend to pull the oil pan, and give it a good cleaning. Is there anything else I should due before starting it, and what grade of oil should I use? I was planning on putting in Valvoline 10-40. I live in So.Ca. and we get some pretty hot weather in the summer. The motor is a built 440 with 10 to 1 compression. Thanks for helping!!!

Nice car!
Drain the tank, lines and carb bowls and put in fresh gas. any particular reason you wanna pull the pan? Just do an oil change and prime it before starting.

Thanks for teasing us with one pic! More pics PLEASE!:xscuseless:

Glad to hear you made it through your illness and you are back in the drivers seat:thumbsup:

Like Bee said above run through the fuel system and also check the brake system. Are you removing the pan due to leaking? If so are you sure its just the pan? Or the infamous rear main seal...or both...

As far as oil goes...man there is A LOT of opinions on that...but here are my choices in no specific order

1. Brad Penn
2. Joe Gibbs
3. Valvoline VR

BTW I am a 69 X owner as well:welcome:

Just drain the oil, if you wanna get fancy, heat the pan with a hair dryer and watch more drain out, pour in a quart and let that drain through. Fill the filter up with oil and let it soak in a few minutes. Don't forget to add zinc if you don't have roller lifters.

A year is not that long in a mild climate. 10-40 is a good weight choice for a BB. I use Amsoil Signature Synthetic 10-40. It has high-zinc. Don't suppose there was Sta-Bil in the gas tank? Does the gas smell ok? I would probably feel and check the oil and start it if the gas smells ok.

Listen at first start, and ensure that the oil pressure builds quickly. Be prepare to run it for at least 45 minutes. Full up to operating temperature and drive it too. Fresh gas.

My new Challenger get as little as 900 miles a year. I use sta-bil and have gone to 2 year oil changes with the Amsoil extended drain 0-30. All assuming it was running well when last parked.

That's a gorgeous car! They pretty much covered everything. I would add to check tire pressures and all other fluids.
Hopefully your health is better and you get to drive that beauty some more. Driving a GTX is usually good for one's morale.

Hell, I started a 440 after 18 years of not even rolling the crankshaft during storage. Cleaned entire fuel system, changed oil, filed points, prelubed oiling and fired right up. No problems! Now I have installed oil accumulators on two (soon to be three) of my seldom used vehicles to prelube them before starting. Just makes sense to me.

We should get our cars together some time!

I see no reason to drop the pan. Personally, I'd just change the oil and take it for a ride and burn the fuel out. I'd bet that once the carb gets fuel, she'll fire right up.

Thanks for replying Ranger16. I broke my back in two places, and don't get around like I used to. I dreaded to think how I was going to get it up on Jacks, and crawl underneath!!!

Hey Jeff, nice to know there's another Mopar
guy in the neighborhood. Most of the guys I talk to live miles away from me. I emailed the Inland Valley Mopar Club about becoming a member, and never heard back from them. Do you go to the car shows??

Thanks for replying. No leaks, I just thought it would be a good idea to drop the pan and give it a good look and cleaning since it's sat for so long!! I'll post the motor once I get the Christmas goodies installed. :-)

I was told if I start using synthetic oil, I'd start getting oil leaks?? It was running 100% before my surgeries.

Amsoil has seal massagers that others don't. No leaks on mine. AC car too! Sweet.

Some shows....there's a fun one April 8th in Chino called the Corn Feed Run.....be awesome to see your GTX there!
This Spring and Summer I'm gonna try to organize a couple of driving get togethers.....beach cruise etc....

Jeff

Thanks for the pics. Gorgeous inside & out ! And, what tops it off for an ol' skooler like me, are the cragar wheels, column tach, & gauge pod. And, most importantly, hope your convalescence is going well, and you're feeling fine.
