First off I will admit that I still have a lot to learn about carb tuning and plugs , I'm new to old school if that makes sense lol. Earlier today I sent some engine pics to my friend / mentor who's an old school racer and gives me a lot of tips / tricks of the trade. The first thing he said was nice bullet , then you need carb tunning. He said this just from seeing the pics of the engine and I guess the black in the venturi's. The car seems to run strong , although I have no idea how my gas milage is (nor do I care) . . So do it look like I'm running rich or does this little ok pretty normal? Also where would you start with tuning or diagnosing how it's running ? .. Also its a 1050 quick fuel . Thanks for the help!

BTW forgive me for the filthy engine pictures , still have to do a spring detail .

If the car runs fine...no backfires, hesitation, idling issues etc....It may have been a previous problem that someone else corrected...

black in the venturis is a tune problem. i'll suspect that the engine has spit up thru the carb several times.

I agree, I'd start with cleaning it really good then drive it for awhile to make sure it isn't from a previous problem. It may seam to run alright but it just may run even better once it's dealt with. Likely in the timing for it to be spitting out of the carb.

Yup, only when trying to start it though

Probably a stupid question, but do I have to take it off to clean it or can I just use a rag and carb cleaner?

As long as it's not a build up you can just clean it in place, your just trying to see if it's still happening curently. I don't disagree that it wouldn't be better to remove it just not necessary for what your doing.

that makes sense and i'd bet it's a cold start problem. a choke riches the fuel mix at start-up and you don't have one. this can create a lean condition and if the fuel level in the carb is down some you'll get a pop thru the carb creating the black soot/carbon. maybe a couple of extra pumps on the throttle and making sure the float levels are where they should be will help at start-up. also, the initial timing being slow can make the problem worse.

I'd highly suggest one of these books, or another one,
educate yourself on how they work & what does what, when...

It could be a combination of all or just something simple

It could be just too fat/too big of main jets,
just that's not causing the soot thou, unless it's really fat/rich,

It could too big of a accel. pump cam &/or squirter/nozzle size,

----------------------------------------------------------
Just spit-balling here; a what if, scenario
I don't know your build that well...

It could be reversion between the carb & manifold,
{blow by, bad intake valve to seat/sealing usually causes it}
usually too big of carb or retarded ignition or retarded camshaft,
I kind of doubt it's that {?}
If it diesels when it shuts off that could cause that too...
{usually runs hots & really lean, usually pre-ignition/detonation issues}
Possible wrong/retarded ignition/cam timing & it'd be sluggish
& hard starting too...

A leak-down test will tell you "IF" &/or where it leaks,
"if" it leaks by the rings or valves etc., you'll hear it there,
if you have any of those suspicions {?}
----------------------------------------------------------------

It could be just idle circuits &/or air bleeds Fat/Rich on a Dominator
little jets on the top by the bores, generally bigger leans it out
opposite of the main jetting, anyway;
there's a ton of different variables it could possibly be

How to Super Tune Holley Carbs by David Vizard.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------
it could need a tad bit more initial ignition timing too,
that will sometimes lean it out enough, if it's already really close
--------------------------------------------------------------------

for tuning purposes;
Have you read the plugs ?
What heat range are the plugs too ?
plugs "it's probably not cause of it",
but it helps to have the proper stuff to begin with
they will tell you if it's fat or lean etc.

it's pretty hard to do accurate tuning over the internet
especially by only a couple of still photos,
good quality videos do help some too, but not like being there,
more information the better, when it comes to tuning issues

Someone here will get you close or steer you in the proper directions

Good Luck with the tuning

Listen to 'lew'& 'bud'. I was about rdy to chime in on absence of choke also. You always get some kind of backfire w/o a choke on cold startup.

Holy ****, thanks for the help!

Also I use accel 0416S plugs which are heat range 6 and they are gapped to .044
