ever consider selling out and saying F it?

when I was a kid I realized I had a talent for this stuff........ and thought, what could be cooler than building hot rods for a living? ......... boy, was I a dumb ****!

worse yet..... in the late 80s I borrowed a cam-corder and began filming the first car building reality show........ gee, what a stupid idea!

Man did that strike a chord .
Sounds like you were describing me.
I seem to have all the same **** going on that you do.
I take money up front on a big job but not enough.
I feel like Im asking too much.
I recently just finished a job that should have taken no more than two weeks to complete.
So, I took no money up front.
People couldn't make a decision about anything they wanted.
The job dragged out for 4 -1/2 months.
Back and forth setting up and taking down tools.
Two weeks of pay stretched out over 4 months.
Too many people I have to rely on so that I can get paid.
I had my kid working for me for about a year and decided that he should go another route.
I have to fight with people to collect money that Im owed and it sucks.
I always see these contractors that owe me money and say they don't have it right now on facebook posting pictures of themselves on vacation or with new toys.
Pay your bills first!!!
Anyway, sorry I went off here but I guess we all have some kind of bullshit we have to deal with.
I can't wait to get out myself.

Bob...... I had a hard time charging you 500 bucks for beefing up your leaf spring area...... it took all day, and we didn't burn the car down, I guess it was worth it!.

You probably could have gotten me to tile your whole house in exchange for the bracing work at the time.
Lmao

Oh I can beat (for stupidity) that I license and insure 10 vehicles a 5th wheel 2 trailers and a boat. There 2 of us and we drive 1 car 90% of the time. And I am building 2 cars now lol

Not in the auto business but my recent heart attack made me say **** this! Selling a business is difficult, at least a remodeling business. i cannot just say I'm done and close the doors because at any one time I have 6 or7 folks houses all torn up or incomplete. If I tell my employees I am not going to sell anymore they are going to bolt for a new job and leave me hanging unless I can develop some great incentive to hang on long enough to finish the work. It is not like I haven't been working on this for quite some time, I am simply hoping someone will buy the business and I just slide out! Wish me luck. At least the broker says he has not seen many businesses period that are as solid as mine, hope that helps.

Maybe this is your ticket to get out of CA.? Good Luck

This kinda took a side track I think as I thought it was about downloading away from the hobby, but also seems to be talking about the work force as well. Man, I bleed for you guys as I'm in the same boat. I tried to start a biz that failed back in 2015, moved, and now just don't care to enter the work force or try starting a Biz again at 59. I don't want to do a **** job for $10 @ Hr. which seems to be all that I can find. F that BS!

Seems like we are almost all the same age group on here. I lucked out and got retirement with the company I worked for. Not much but we make it work. Them GOLDEN YEARS I always herd about...well what I have found is the wrapper might be gold but what I found inside was a TURD. lol

I cant relate, but, I just wanted you fellas to know that I feel for ya and wish you all the best of luck in cutting it all loose.

Yes, that bit sucks when you see it.
I have been in a similar boat to many of you guys. I left paid employment 2006 to start up on my own as an Electrical Contractor. It went well for a few years but then the ability to balance chasing money, keeping the Taxman happy and completing jobs takes over, and the fun in life starts to fade away.

I started this one job for a guy over 8 years ago, and it is still not finished - not my fault. He is doing his own house renovation, and a serious rebuild at the same time while living in the house. I thought it might take 18 months....boy was I wrong. Four years ago, I said F*** it, and accepted an offer by my supplier to run the branch I was buying from. Worked out alright for 2 years, and then it went bad - back-stabbed to hell by the two guys under me as well as the newly reinstated previous manger who I had helped getting work soon after returning from Australia on his 'working holiday'. I will never trust people again like that. I then took up with a former employer again (for the 3rd time), and stayed with them until just 3 months ago....too many Limies working there now - ******** to work with. I now work for another Contractor who treats his guys well, pays fair and always on time, and welcomes any and all suggestions at work. Now the Taxman is off my back, I can start to relax.

The only issue I have now is this farkin' house renovatio dragging on still. I should tell the guy to get someone else, except I am so far into the job, and it is nearly complete, it's harder to walk away. Basically doing it for the satisfaction....not the money.

I don't mind helping close friends and family, but they have all been told lately that I have my own stuff to sort out, and they are leaving me alone. My sister generously offered her husband to come and help me do my fences and digging etc.....and my father has pitched in tho help out also. And in return I have done things to help them out. I don't think you could ever say you have done enough to repay your own parents, even if you had a rough up-bringing. We were working hard on the farm as kids, but we always had shoes, clothes and the best of food - how many kids can say they were sick of lamb chops, eye fillet steak and crayfish (lobster) by the age of 15? :D

To get back on topic, I have pretty much been turning down any work outside my regular job, as it really does cut into my time. I have hardly put any miles on my GTX in the last 5 years....that has to change soon. :steering:

at what point is this thread considered "viral"? ...... or did I just kill it

obviously, I didn't work today....... maybe I will get fired

Well, at least I can say I have been enjoying my GTX. 10,000 miles since getting it on the road 3 seasons ago. I'm like you guys I suppose, ask me about a kitchen or bathroom and I could care less. after 36 years of it, it just doesn't blow my skirts up anymore.

or did I just kill it
No, didn't kill the thread. :D I think you have made people aware of the fact that we do more for others than we do for ourselves. An honourable trait to have, but does not help your own pocket or give you any spare time to yourself. I like this thread.:D

After hearing on the news yesterday about the increasing production output to come of electrics vehicles, I wonder how long before we reach the 'tipping point' in which average people start losing interest in the traditional collector cars, and ditch them in favour of the new latest thing? It has been said that by 2030, there will be no cars sold that have an internal combustion engine as we know it.
That can only reinforce what this thread is about, and how long before there is a mass exodus from the hobby as we currently enjoy it.

I'm feeling the same way about cars........ I could probably get max benefit by parting them out

I'll stop building cars when I'm dead.
me too
but I'm smart enough to know there are much easier ways to making a buck
then building cars to pay the bills so i do it for a hobby only
as soon as the clock is ticking, ruins it all for me.
i get begged to do it on the side many times
been tempted,but I know better..

I don't make my living building cars.

I guess it could also apply to guys who's cars explode into a giant pile of **** once they start working on them........ and it happens more often than not

I represent that remark!

Seriously, I'm not sure it is any consolation, but my job has been pure hell for almost a year. It was busy the last couple of years, but it is now getting to the point where I am working constantly. This past 4th of July weekend, Monday AND Tuesday I worked every day. I am salaried "exempt", which means I don't get jack **** extra for working 20 extra hours (or more) per week. The work just keeps piling on. All I am trying to say here is the grass is not always greener...

There are jerks to work with (I hope I wasn't one of them), but there are also some good ones too. Maybe a bit of a break might refresh your batteries. Come to Carlisle and I'll buy you a beer or two (dinner too if you are there for dinner). I promise, I'll ask you to do NO bodywork on my car over the weekend!

Can relate to 95% of what's been posted.
Have thought about the sell out. Every thing house, cars, belongings the works. But at 62 reality hits and the question what the heck happens next? Still have to make a living and quiting has not been an acceptable option.
