Quick question: Can I put on a non-AC water pump pulley to remove the AC compressor?

I won't be able to get the AC working on my '73 Charger until next summer. Even then, I'm not sure if I even want AC as there's something special about driving around in this old car with the windows down.

So, rather than keeping the compressor on the engine to route the belts, I was wondering if I could replace the AC water pump pulley with a non-AC water pump pulley with no additional changes? IE: keep the four groove crank pulley, the two groove alternator pulley, and all the brackets.

This is the pulley I'm looking at buying:

Thanks!

You have to pay attention to the back spacing on this particular pulley especially if you're running a four groove down south. I use the four groove on the crank but I put a two groove on the water pump and run double belts to it and the power steering pump. It will all depends on what grooves on the lower pulley were originally designated to run which accessories and all the grooves are not the same belt width or spaced the right distance. If you went with a double groove pulley at the water pump, no problem but if you go single groove I can't say for sure.

Cool. That what I thought.

I was looking at the CVR Racing double grove WP V-belt pulley last night. They look slick. So do you have one running to the ALT and one to the PS? It sound like you have two going to the PS. I didn't see any double grove PS pulley. Can you post a pic of your setup? That would be nice to have that extra piece of insurance of two WS and PS belts. I had my PS belt break in '97 and it sucked.

Here is a pic looking from the top down using a 4 groove lower pulley. I need this setup because with high horsepower you can literally burn the belts up due to slippage on acceleration. I ordered the water pump pulley from Bouchillon, they are the only people I trust for high rpm pulleys.

Nice setup. I like it. I'm going with this setup on this motor. Here's the pulley:

So, what pulley do you have on the power steering pump? The site say to use the idler for the 4th belt but nothing about the double PS pulley you're running. Looks like a Dorman 300-125 would work.

Btw, what belt sizes are you using for the alt and the wp/ps? And are the heater hoses running into a cooler for extra cooling?

As my grandfather use to say "Sweating gets the poisons of out you." J/K.

I've lived down here my whole life and drove black cars with a few exceptions. It's not so bad if you park in the shade. The worst is sitting in traffic with cars all around you. That's enough to make even a newer car's AC struggle. Tinting the window with a good heat blocking tint is a huge help!

Kidding aside. I can't get the AC working because I need new lines, a new condenser, and a new compression. I rather spend that on replacing my ratty old seat covers.

I'm pretty sure this will not turn out to be a "quick" question.

Is your car BB or SB? Is it the original?

I'm fairly convinced that EVERY year, there were BB A/C and non-A/C and SB A/C and non-A/C setups and all the pulleys and water pumps aligned differently.

That means there are potentially up to four different sets of parts for every model year that all must match in order to line up.

It was mentioned above that the water pump may have a different depth front to rear and regardless of which pulley you run on it, may NEVER line up with your crank and alt.

I have come to refer to this as "pulley hell".

It's always best to get everything from a donor car, if available.

I keep any and all alt bolt spacers I find, and have modified some to work with mis-matched combos.

Some BB trucks and motor homes had an idler pulley that mounts in place of the A/C compressor. Those are good to have laying around as well.

That also suggests that A/C pumps and pulleys were used on non-A/C applications.

YY1,
I can testify regarding "Pulley Hell"
I went thru withdrawls when I decided to adapt my original 440 A/C Compressor to the Hemi and retain the authentic Duel Quad Hemi air cleaner. I wanted everything under the hood to resemble the way Ma Mopar would have added Air to a Hemi in the day.
I ended up moving the Compressor forward just enough to clear the Hemi Air Cleaner. Then I had to modify an early BB Power Steering bracket to move the Power Steering down to clear the A/C compressor. Alternator bracket is a early BB. I used a combination of Hemi and my 440 pulleys with modified spacers for belt alignment. The biggest obstacle was the fan back spacing. The back of the fan blades interfered with the compressor pulley when I got all the belts to align up. I had to make a spacer for the water pump flange and shave the back of the fan blades to get clearance. it was fun shaving the fan blades and maintaining fan balance.

All in all I got it to work. Here's some photos.

Dang son. That's a lot of chrome. Do you own a chrome shop?
Triple Black,
I don't own a chrome shop. But 38 years ago when I put the hemi in the RR I was single, no kids and only had to support myself and my car hobby. Chrome plating back in the 80's was much cheaper than now. (EPA requirements were nonexistent and much more competition)

Thick wall steel pipe and spacers can be cut to any length required.

Ah. It looks good, but that's a lot of chrome. Looks great for 38 year old chrome too. I'm doing the '73 Charger engine bay in black and orange with very little chrome. I think this is the cock for dolly:

I hear you about the price of chroming now. My 70+ year old father went into shock when I told him how much I got quoted to rechrome the front and rear bumpers. The quote was $400 per bumper and $75 for the bumperlets, EACH! He said he rechromed everything on his '59 Olds for $100 in '84. Oh, how times have changed!

Guy a church owned a plating company and would have plated anything that would have fit the plater at cost. Pass away a couple weeks ago.
I never got around to getting anything done.

I'm a little confused as to what I see in the pic. Two belts from the alt straight to the crank?? and two belts from the WP to the PS pump?? Double pulley on PS pump?? I have a 4 groove crank pulley and want to replace the one groove WP pulley with a 2 grove so I can delete the AC.

Curious why you dont just get the 2 groove 440source non-AC crank pulley as well as the mentioned single groove non-AC WP pulley and delete the AC & assorted brackets/idlers? I dont think you'd have to change anything else other than belts. A little shimming to get the alignment maybe but it seams like that would be the easiest & cheapest solution...
