how much metal should I find in my oil on the first change. got about 200 miles on the motor so figured it was time to get the break in oil out, there is a very small amount of metallics in the oil, have not run a mag thru it yet to see if any is steel or iron, find that out tomorrow. I'm thinking I'm alright, but need to make sure. header on the pass side leaks at the center cylinders, any one use the new heat resistant silicone for a gasket? have talked to four or five people that say they have and it works great?? what say ye fellers?? Are you talking about fine, powder like metal, or bigger...and how much? If there is very much, chance it can contaminate the engine, and moving parts, bearings.
One step you might do, is to open up the oil filter, and see what's there.

Sometimes it can be considered 'normal first run' stuff, considering how the motor is built. But, if it's 'making metal', meaning it doesn't quickly stop, problem...
 
I am waiting for the filter to drain now, what I'm seeing is extremely fine, I found two small bugs in the filter when I poured it out, I will drag a clean mag thru the oil to see if there is anything big, and I'll have to wait till next time to check again. I'll answer back as soon as the filter is opened up. Dave
 
Like Miller said. If this is the first oil change on a fresh engine and the filter was not looked at and replaced after the initial break-in, you're probably going to see some scary stuff. The oil likely will look real metallic, but you shouldn't find any flakes of considerable size in the filter bottom after cutting. You might see some very small pieces of silicone or debris depending on how clean the assembler was but nothing accumulating. Each oil change after, the filter should become cleaner and cleaner. Cutting filters after the engines come off the dyno use to make me a little nervous after seeing all the metallic. But after seeing enough of them, it's the bigger pieces that would get you into trouble.If your really nervous and questioning it, cut that new filter after a short amount of miles and eek if it is cleaning up. That's assuming you do have good oil pressure and no questionable noises now. Good luck.
 
DLevel, checked all thru the oil with a rare earth magnet and did not pick up any thing at all, the filter had two small pieces of silicone in it, and four or five metal flakes, very small, overall I am very happy with no more than what was in the filter. bottle it up and use it for the kids 300k honda. should be able to put the amsoil in it tomorrow. Dave.
