DePouli's 1969 Charger 318

I had to trim down my nibs a bit with a razor knife so they would pull through. I used gasket adhesive to seal the end gaskets and used a few clamps to hold them in place.

Don't know how I missed this thread . . . with 2 people that are in NC posting . . . I live in Concord ( one said he has family here ) and the other is in Charlotte - just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

I usually attend both the Spring and the Fall show at the speedway - I think the major sponsor changed this year . . . so if you're attending the show, and eould like to meet up, send me a PM and we can make arrangements.

Great work on the car so far - thanks for the updates . . .

Question #1 - Any tips on getting the water tube assembly apart from the heater core?

Question #2 - Any one have photos or info pertaining to correct suspension colors? I have some but not all from the restoration guide book I bought many years back.

I live in Concord

Where exactly? I'm over by Concord Mills.

I'll be with Buicks Sat. and Sunday with my 38 wherever the speedway sticks us. And Thursday and Friday I work for the Hornet's Nest AACA, we put on the show. In HNR it's just Charlotte Autofair...no matter what the speedway decides to call it.

Last week and in to this week I continued to clean and paint suspension and other pieces. I painted the sway bar, tie rod connector, steering column and gas filler tube. I cleaned and readied for paint the trans cross member, pulleys, steering pump, and a bunch of other pieces to be painted black. This week I hit the shift lever assembly and associated pieces. Tomorrow I will get the gas tank straps and some other misc. pieces.

The trans went to the re-builder on Monday and I have the AC compressor boxed up to be sent to Classic Air for rebuild and R134 conversion.

I've been playing around with paint on the engine. I had some plastic coat and the nozzle (actually I think it is in the can) plugged up. I bought a dupli-color rattle can off amazon and that's not so hot either as it seems to collect a lot of unused paint and then dripped an made a mess. I also banged out a dent in one valve cover. it's not perfect but much much better.

Today I started messing with the HVAC box as seen by the photos below. I got it pretty well tore apart and I will replace the evaporator just for good measure because I don't want to come back later if it leaks. I have a replacement heater core as I know it was leaking or something inside the car with antifreeze was leaking. AS mentioned above I cant figure out how to detach the water tube assembly from heater core. I'm reasonably confident from the shop manual and diagrams I have all the screws and stuff out it is simply that the outer tubes are stuck on the inner tubes. Should I spray some penetrating oil on them?

Got the Trans back from the rebuilder yesterday, quicker than I expected.

Also stopped by the shop replacing the cancer and they finally got to work on the car and started cutting.

I ordered an evaporator coil and a deluxe heater box insulation / gasket kit thing from Original Air Group. I already had a new heater core from a while back so Once the new order items arrive I can start rebuilding the heater box .

This weekend I plan to clean up the drive shaft, bumper brackets and fan and get them ready for paint.

moparnation74, Yours is on a whole 'nother level than this will be, but I'll have fun journey along the way and am glad to have your thread to refer to.

Your first picture in this thread shows a charger centered around a family and one has got to love that....Not many guys would let their "boss" sit in the driver seat, running or not, lol...

Furthermore, your keeping the loyal and dependable 318...brings back memories for me...My first charger was a 69 SE white hat special with a 318...Loved that car....

Brings me to your build...Different in the mere fact your not throwing a big block into it...You are going out of the norm and I like that! I will be following the progress on this build, indeed....

Keep up the good work....

Thank you for the compliment as well....

My youngest, the one who seems more interested in cars in general, was my helper on Saturday. He "helped" hold the splash pans while I wire brushed off undercoating. He was quite proud of himself for being a big helper. He has already claimed the Charger as his. My oldest wants my '38 Buick.

I let the "boss" drive the 08 Superbee the day I bought it but she hasn't seemed to want to drive it again since, not that we take it out much as it only have about 9K on it in almost 10 years. I don't think she has driven my 38 Buick, but I would trust her if she wanted or needed to. I should probably give her a quick lesson on that car as there are some weird quirks compared to what we all associate with normal nowadays. I told the kids when they get their license they are gonna have to help me jockey cars to Autofair (I may have to give them the slow ones to drive, just in case).

I like my little 318. It's got plenty of power for the car and decent gas mileage....and you never see them at car shows, so yeah it is different and I'm OK with that.

Sounds great!

That is what I like about it...it is different...Plus it keeps to the originality of the car:thumbsup:

BTW I would like to see some pics of that Buick....

Great work! Great thread! That metal work was the most fun part of the rebuild on mine.. Chargers Rule!

I haven't had a chance to work on the car myself, but progress was still made. I received some parts I bought and the shop has made good progress on the car. Here is some photos of the progress they made

The shop also hit the rot on the inner fender at the battery tray and replaced the wire harness tabs on one valve cover.

This coming week the shop should install the new rear valence I bought and then they will start working on paint. At this stage we are gonna do floor boards inside and out, engine bay / firewall inside and out, and jambs. Then I'll get the car back to do suspension, drive train re-installation and interior firewall build out, before we do the majority of the paint.

Well,
Been doing little bits here and there while the car is still at the other shop but kinda running out of things to work on without the car itself.
Put the heater box back together. Does anyone know where to get the little end cap things. I didn't know to save those until too late. someone has got to be repro'ing them but Year one doesn't have them in the catalog.

Speaking of YearOne placed a nice order last week to pick up next week but Irma disrupted my plans so we'll see when i get down to ATL next.

Oh and anyone have a source for a "Chrysler logo" that should be on the VIN tag. You can see the 318 in the background.
