Well ****, was afraid of this the whole reason to look for new heads. for now just going to tear it down and replace the gaskets, soooo

What are the best gaskets to get? Can I use the MLS style cometic ones on aluminum heads to iron block will it give me trouble free condition? have the fel pros on there now and can only imagine for the last few years its been failed. Exhaust gasses in the coolant see picture below this just sux so I'll be spending my labor day weekend replacing them :(

Which ones to get?? need opinions on this please

I don't have one of those tools so I'm not sure what we're looking at for results.
Good luck with the new gaskets...

an MLS gasket requires a pretty fine finish on the head and block to seal. surprised the 8519 didn't seal. before you buy anything do some research and make sure there isn't a head or block issue. I know from experience that if an alum head fits snug on the locating dowels they can cause an issue. look and double look before you buy.

If they fit snug? Did you mean to say didn't fit snug?

So questions,

The water passages are narrowed and some blocked completely on both gaskets is that normal??

WTF is going on here are these water passages supposed to be reduced and blocked?

I have cometics on an iron block, Aluminum heads without issue. The only reason I went with them is to get my compression to 10.4:1. Leave the slots in the gasket as they were made to limit flow to the heads.

Surface your heads as ALL heads will be warped to some degree. Find someone who uses diamond to surface aluminum which will result in the best finish possible. The Ra #'s need to be very low like around 10 micro inch or less. Heads need to be flat and smooth. The issues with MLS gaskets is that if the surface finish is too rough, you will have "Cold" sealing problems. When hot, all will seal. But, when cold, and things contract, channels can open up, and coolant and/or oil can leak. Also, the smoother the finish, the more surface area available for the gasket to seal against.

As they said - to run MLS type gaskets both surfaces have to be very smooth. Smoother than the factory finish on the aftermarket heads, and MUCH smoother than most block surfaces. And as noted - the shop that cuts it has to use modern equipment to reach that Ra value. Oldschool millers can't get it flat or smooth enough.
From what you note - I would check the dowels, and verify the head bolts are not bottoming out and giving false torque values. What you have for a gasket should have worked fine.

Thanks, hoping Bruce's heads are smooth when they show up, and the block is pretty clean and flat don't see any issues with a new set of gaskets and heads the fel pro's are about .30th vs the cometics at .40th doubt I'll ever notice a compression difference?

I will start by saying I'm no head gasket expert and these guys seem much more knowledgeable.
Having said that...

The motor is in the car, right? IF you're not racing it & IF you want to get it back on the road for cruising & IF you're not running 12:1 compression or nitrous & IF there is any question at all about your block deck smoothness vs. what is required for a particular head gasket to seal well (all IF's)...... then maybe you could just replace the one side with the same type of gasket, add some head bolt washers to be sure the head bolts aren't bottoming out and pre-fit the head (maybe without gasket - good point Moper) to make sure the dowel pins aren't hanging up the head from seating and be done with it??? Maybe check if the head is warped and possibly take a "skim cut" on the deck surface if it is? Sorry if I'm over simplifying and/or this is race motor.

If you are leaking combustion gasses into the water jackets, you should be able to see an area, or a groove, where the pressure was leaking into the coolant. The head gasket would show signs of this. Can you see an area where the head gasket failed?

when you mount the new heads make sure they fit easily , maybe slightly loose, on the locating dowels. if you feel any snugness open the dowel hole in the head just enough relieve the tightness. I've done a set of indy EZ's were the dowel holes were so far off there was no way it would fit. alum isn't as stable as cast iron so I think it works better with a little wiggle.

looks normal to me.

Before blaming the gasket for failure, figure out why it failed. I've even reused Fel-Pros on 13-1. was it loss of fastener torque, binding block threads, detonation, warped/burned deck or head? Stone and measure the surfaces for being flat. Check bolts for stretch (I'm assuming it isn't studded)

All bolts are ARP with washers, only have passenger side off so far and don't see any tears or cuts that would cause a cross contamination. 5 years ago I seem to remember the heads fitting pretty smoothly on the dowel pins, not tight maybe snug.

I will be getting to the driver side today hopefully before it gets to 115° today **** hot out here.

Well I will have a set of Stealth heads for sale lol anyone interested let me know I'll give you a good deal.

I think the seals failed on them lots of oil soak, either that or I installed the rings wrong :( didn't see much wet oil in the cylinders though. Thinking seals are gone based on what pretty much everyone else says about these stealths they
have crap parts on them. probably need to be gone through and new stuff put on them.

Big Difference between these and Bruce's heads look at the combustion chamber area? So much cleaner and smoother.

Man what a pain in the *** getting it off with the TTI's in place so far had to lift the motor on that side. Hoping the angled plugs will work better with these headers too.

Wish I had some help I'm feeling it this morning haha sux getting old should have just taken it to a shop lmao.

most all of this gunk cleaned off fairly easy
