Z-BAR Removal 69 RR

What's the best way to remove Z-BAR from a 69 RR, Take off out side nut first and then unscrew from bell housing ?

Just unbolt the nut on the ball stud in the wheelhouse. The other end just slides off.
 
Yep, and throw some new plastic bushings, rubber seals & wheel bearing grease back in there while you're at it.
 
Yes indeed. I've done this a billion times. The point was you don't unscrew the shaft.
Ok got it out , will rebuild, now when putting back on do you insert plastic bushing in Bell House side and just slid onto ball?
 
Yup
Check both ball studs for uneven wear.
Check inside Z bar for wear grooves also.
If either is worn, toss it, your new plastic bearings won't last long. All parts are readily available.
But yes to your question, stick bearing halves on bellhousing stud with grease.
Reverse removal procedure, set clutch adjustment, burn rubber.
 
You might want to check the tab that goes to the clutch pedal arm that sits on the shaft for cracks. Mine broke off and I was locked in first gear on the way home once.

That is correct. You "might" find it easier to unscrew the ball on the bellhousing to get the rubber gasket on, plastic bushings & wheel bearing grease first, but that is a matter of preference. The frame side stud is easy to get at. "Sometimes" the stud on the frame wants to spin around instead of tightening up, but you can hold it in place with a very thin open end wrench... a little tough to get the wrench in there & you "might" have to grind one down thinner since it's a little tight between the z-bar & the frame bracket once you tighten up the nut. Another option is to use an impact wrench on the nut to tighten it really fast. Also sometimes I've had to "pry" on the nut/stud on the frame side with a big screwdriver to keep it in place when tightening the nut. Sometimes the stud tries to "walk out" of the frame bracket when you tighten the nut.
 
What they just said. And, check everything... everything, even the fork lever, the adjusting rod for cracks or wear. If the z-bar setup is original, you should consider new parts, you can get the whole kit.
