440 source stealth heads

Stealths are good value. That means for the money spent they give decent return. Not you don't have to spend the money. Ready to bolt on, with upgraded springs, retainers, and locks, the valve job corrected, and the gasket surfaces milled flat, you'll be into them for close to $2K depending on the shop that's doing the work. And for most performance builders - that's what they need to be in condition to run hard reliably. They will be much better than any factory head, plus lighter, plus a much better chamber to work with when designing the engine which is as important as the power.
In terms of camshafts - the ones being marketed for sound now, simply suck for power. You do not ever buy a cam for sound. You buy it to make the power you want, with the other parts you have, and the sound is whatever it is.
What cam would you recommend as a good street cam? I know you said it depends on the power I'm looking to make but I don't have a set number I'm going for. I'm looking a doing a possible H/C/I build that I want to be reliable.

I did start tearing into the motor last night and I have 6 pistons left to remove. Currently the crank is stuck so I have the bottom end soaking in oil the to try to help free up. It is a 2 bolt main so how strong is the stock block?

The block is Plenty strong.
Cams come in many flavors. Many factors have to be considered when a cam is selected.Size and weight of the car, auto or stick, rpm range, gear ratio, intake type, exhaust size, and your type of driving to name a few.

It is an auto but as for the rest of it I'll basically be replacing all of it. Not sure on weight (its a factory car) or gear ratio that's in the rear end. Is there a benifit to long tubes or equal length on the 440s?

Block is only as strong as your tuning. Most engines fail due to detonation. How many guys at the car shows and drag strip with carburetors do you see with an air-to-fuel gauge? Not very many. Reading the plugs is fine, but it is nowhere near perfect.

We were all in your position once. We all wanted a budget build, to make incredible power. Most of us have ran parts, two or three times over. Buy once, cry once. Pick up Andy Finkbeiner's book, read it cover-to-cover, twice. It will answer every question you have, and then some. It's the best money you can spend at this point.

Man, $3k? It can be done but you’re gonna have to be patient. Good news is you already have block, rods and crank, and assuming the rest of the big block accessories.

I’m another cheap bastard and originally built my 451 for like $4500, but I had to buy the block and rotating assembly. Took me a couple years to stockpile parts at the right price. Wiped cam cost me $1000 in the end, plus $1500 EFI, but I ended up with a simple and effective package that should last me a long time.

stealth heads, lunati voodoo hydraulic ft cam 274/286 if I recall, rpm intake, ductile iron rockers. The car really goes and at the cruise nights, she really turns heads with the sound.

I’m a fan of the 440 source heads. The spring seat pressures were all over the place but all machine work checked out ok my my machinist. Yeah they are known to not flow as advertised, but they still flow better than all but the best porter iron.

That said, I bought before trick flow was even a rumor, so I have to admit that these days I’d wait and save up.

... one bonus of the source heads... they look just like stock when painted.

seek some of my threads on the 440 source heads, you will spend almost 3k to do them right. i bought bare heads for like 400$ each, sent them to Hughes for CNC porting and valves, then had my local guy recheck Hughes work, and set the spring height and mill to correct the compression.
this was before the Trick flows came out.

if i had it to do again, id buy the TF. i bought the TF 190s for my 302 ford, and they are great out of the box.

my machine shop took .004 off my 440 heads, and they werent even close to being flat. guides were tight.

i would not recommend the Stealths run out of the box. i dont trust the Valves or springs, ive heard they come with Comp cam retainers now.

it may make you uncomfortable financially, but take the time and money to do it right the first time!

Yea I had a set of twisted wedge heads on a fox several years ago ad really like them BUT the were on a car I actually drag raced where this one is just to crusie around in. Don't you have to change the rocker arms on the TF heads on the 440?

The TF 270's will accept stock style rockers. Question...does or can TF set up the spring height and seat / open pressure with springs spec'd to your cam or do they send them out in a general configuration? I see no info on the springs supplied with the heads.

they have 2 options with TFs, a flat tappet spring and a roller type spring last time i checked
