this is why the hobby is dying ....

I have never been to any of the big MOPAR shows (Nats or Carlisle), so I can't comment on the prices for certain things. I do love the '68 Coronet/Super Bee...and I will check any add on here just to see what parts are going for. If a decent deck lid comes up, since there are no repo's of it...$500-750 seems to be the average...if I needed one, I would have to pay, but I KNOW what I am looking for and what is/isn't being reproduced.

But maybe the problem is shows like the Barret-Jackson auction:

Joe Smuck sitting on his couch drinking a beer watches as a factory HEMI Satellite or GTX crosses the block and goes for huge numbers...he looks out the window to his back yard and see's the 4 door Satty sitting in the weeds rotting away and figures he is sitting on a gold mine...so he lists the car to get rid of it, when it doesn't sell then he parts it out on craigs or ebay asking big numbers??? I dunno...just speculating while sipping my coffee this morning.

I give anyone the credit who will restore a car back to factory...the time and money spent hunting down and restoring 40 plus year old parts...my hats off to you!! But not my thing...so I could be happy with a replacement part from the local auto parts store. But I do agree....some of the prices people are asking for their used parts are just nuts...and you have to wonder WTF are they thinking they have??!!!

What I run into is people sitting on rusted 4 door basic family driver parts cars behind their barns that feel they are as valuable as what they see on the auctions on TV; so they refuse to sell them, or any parts for 30+ years. Then they die of cancer or cirrhosis, and the car goes to the wrecking yard the next week with 20+ old lawn mowers.

Besides, the hobby isn't dying. I have had tons of students build civics, BMWs, diesel trucks, V-dubs. We build what we see on the road and what we can afford.

$500 steering wheels. Nuts.

How about a NOS 3 spoke steering wheel on ebay, like the one on my 66 Satellite, it came mid 60's Cuda's also $1225 selling price. I didn't bid on it. When it hit $550 2 days before auction ended I was out.

He should consign that gas cap to Barrett Jackson

Yeah! No kidding!! Anyone got some parts or cars they wanna sell me for 80's prices?

Come on guys. If someone pays a price for something, that is what it is worth today. If you can't or don't want to then don't. If this **** is stupid priced why dont you sell out now and wait for the market to crash?

It is the guys part and he can ask anything he wants for it.....Does not mean he will get it....but it is his part...

$300 for a used gas cap is steep even in my books but apparently these are a rare part to find which increases the price...Now if it was a pristine NOS in the box then the price would make more sense....

The reproduction industry sucks and we pay high for low quality junk.....Then comes the NOS and good original parts into play....Law of numbers apply here....There is just not many left and prices reflect that....

Classic cars remind me of a friend that bought a new ferrari. He was finally able to squeeze into a dream car of his but then when it came time for it's first oil change/maintenance he bitched and complained about the 6k bill.....Just because you buy or own one does not mean the accessories/maintenance or parts is free or at a discount...

It is a hobby of choice and you "Pay to Play"

Do not think for a minute that I do not bitch about prices...I do and a lot of parts I waited for years to get a better deal. Deals are still out there but it just depends on your timeframe when the price can really hurt.....Ask me how much I got raped for an NOS trunk seal? Some parts there is just no option...

I find people who are willing to pay whatever the price is for parts, then turn around and complain about what quality labor hours and craftsmanship cost

any of the hobby's are being scalped for prices ,price on demand .:(

NOS means they don't makem anymore and there fewer of them which equals$$$. I complain about prices too.

300 has been the average price for one of these for he last 5 years.

The trim from the other side has also gone up as people have been using those to fabricate a gas cap.

I remember back in the 80's/90's, my brother couldn't keep a cap on his 66 4D as they kept getting stolen. That was when they only cost 20-30 bucks- Now it's even worse.
ya .. thats what im doing .... payed 40 bucks for it ... I guess haveing skills duz help alot ....

Undercutting the market just barely, so you make the sale and the other guy that want's top dollar and isn't willing to budge doesn't.

It's an art.

had to do it .... hated to shell out 300 bucks but it don't look like in going to find a cheaper one in this good of shape. .... good news is ... the guy wanting 600 for his .... he still has it ...lol

Glad you found one! Now find me a pair of 68 Coronet RT inside door emblems in like new condition for that kinda money.

I was at Moultrie, Georgia in November and an old vendor from NJ had a nose two post mirror and I'm thinking,$200-250,
But I was wrong, he wanted $1400 and said that was firm. Good repops are #125.
I just kept walking.
