When pets die.....

Great story. Birds are some of the longest lived pets. Quite often a Parrot will be in a shelter because it outlived its owner.
How old was Rocky?
thanks... he was such a "super" bird! When I got him, they said he was about 4, but the vet guessed him to be a bit older. After 19 years, we guessed he was likely about 35 or so. Larger parrots like Rocky can live to about 60-70 years old... part of the reason I got him. We had to put my brother's dog down after about 16 years.... she was hurting, and I had to tell my brother it was time. It was hard, and I know he blamed me for a while for his loss.

When I took Rocky to his vet, the girls there saw him and rushed over and grabbed him from me and told me to go fill out the forms. "Rocky's here!" they would exclaim. Then ask me, "what was your name again?" LOL

Is it true that your not suppose to say curse words in front of a parrot?

Sorry for your loss and yes, it's never easy. Lost a very much loved pet back in August and am still having a hard time. In fact, I miss her more than the woman that left me nearly a year ago!

It’s rough. I had no real idea how rough until today. And yesterday. I see people talking about how hard it is to lose a pet and never really got it. Don’t get me wrong I love animals. Hate to see them harmed. But I had no idea the emotional toll it takes on you to lose one. I’ve buried two in as many days. It’s been hell. Last night my Pygmy goat belle died. She’d been acting strange and I came home from work to find her dead. I was saddened unbelievably. I consoled myself and buried her. Well today my parents dog (I picked him out 13 years ago) had to be put down. His kidney function was 25% and nothing could be done. I went with my dad to the vet to have him put down. It was only the third time in my life seeing my dad cry. He loved that dog. I helped dig his grave. That’s two in two days. It was way more emotional. But both have left me drained emotionally. It’s been a rough couple days. I would’ve never believed animals can have a hold on you like this. Sorry just wanted to share.

My best friend for 9 years, and he truly was the love of my life, passed away and it broke my heart. We had a true "dog/owner" relationship. The day he passed was the saddest day I've had in 25 years since my parents passed. The vet cremated him and gave me a pouch with his ashes at no cost. There now exists a new young tree in my backyard with his ashes providing nourishment. I will never forget our time together. He was 92% American Bulldog and 8% beagle and classed as a Beabull.

So very sorry for your loss. I've put down several of my best 4-legged friends and I assure you, it does not get easier. After my wife passed away in 2010, I protected our remaining 3 dogs with my life, always worrying about them, always doing everything for them as any responsible, true animal lover would. We never had kids - our dogs were our family, our life. They were the last living connections and associations I had with my late wife. Putting them down over the years (the last 2 within 2 months of each other in 2016) had profound effects on me. I still can't even look at photos of them or even see the same breeds on TV commercials without losing it (losing it right now typing this.) Their ashes surround those of my wife's in the house, protecting her eternally. Animals, especially dogs, are extraordinary creatures and anyone who doesn't get emotional when their's pass needs to check their pulse...

You know it’s part of the deal.
They know it’s part of the deal.
That’s why I never push any of the cats away.
Someday I won’t be able to.

Look at it from the pet’s side....was their life better because you were in it? Could they have done any better than you for an owner?

The Wife and I took this dog in. Buddy was my Brothers dog. Brother Wayne contracted Leukemia and left us at the age of 49. He was really concerned that Buddy would be taken care of so we obliged. That was 2010. He was 7 at the time. The dog is still around. He farts a lot, shits in the house sometimes, paces around to the point where I want to throw a pillow at him....Some pets seem to hang around a lot longer than you wanted!

I will agree with everyone else here who posted, NEVER easy to lose a fur baby....doesn't matter what type, it just plain sucks!!!

Take the time to heal yourself, then you can remember the good times with them!!!

It's funny, but parrots will only say something if they find it interesting. They say swear words because when they're uttered by people they're usually full of emotion: anger, pain, disgust, etc. They don't actually repeat something because they hear it all the time, they repeat it because they find it interesting. That's not to say that parrots won't pick up a phrase they hear all the time, but generally if it's boring, they aren't interested.

I know that it gets better with time. And seeing how I haven’t lived with Presley, in years, I thought it would be easier on me. But it wasn’t. He was the runt and I picked him out as a teenager. But after I moved out he stayed with my parents. My wife and I have a morkie ( Maltese and yorkie) and I’m saddened every time he sits in my lap. I remember Presley ( miniature schnauzer ) used to be the same way as a puppy. Then I think that one day Jennings will pass on and it hurts my heart. I don’t have any pictures of Presley on my phone nor any recent pictures of belle ( my goat) but I’ll post a few of what I do have.

Belle who I lost is the brown goat. This was right after I got her and Norman. The cow is one I’ve raised since he was two days old. Mooagi. Then there is kitty and Jennings. Couldn’t find any recents of him. My wife probably has them.

Sorry for your loss, it's never fun. I was starting to wonder if I was just going soft, seams the older I get the harder I take it for some reason. As bad as the losses are I can't be without my fury companion.
