Am I mistaken or does the temp sender and fuel sender both work off of the voltage limiter? Could it be a bad pin on the board. Try checking the connections on the PCB on the back side of the cluster. Do check the pins they have a tendency to come loose from the PCB.

I had a new sensor that was bad or not for my car.. To test I plugged the sensor in like normal (not in the engine) grounded it and hit it with a heat gun. I bought another sensor and tested it before installing, it worked grea. I also noticed the bad one was not exactly the same as the other two, you may want to compare them. I also checked resistance and they were different as well.

I'm dealt this this same exact issue last weekend. Gauge pegged when purple wire is grounded. That pretty much told me everything going from sending unity to gauge had continuity. I know you said thermost was new and working last year but that's what was wrong with mine, never was getting hot enough to move the needle on the gauge I replace OEM temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, fuel gauge, sending unit, and the board on the back of the cluster. And it ended up being the damn thermostat

Thank YOU EVERYONE FOR THE HELP> So gauges, wiring and circuit board all new. Been driving me crazy without figuring out why Temp gauge wont work. So i took out the new second temp sending unit as some suggested, I removed the white pipe tape that was on it when taken new out of box. Just took my awesome 70 RR for an hour ride and TEMP GAUGE WORKS! Wonder why they put tape on it from factory but then that caused temp gauge to not work. THANKS SO MUCH< THIS SITE IS THE BEST

Congratulations!! Probably put that crap tape on there because it was made in China. Now, I would remove it again and install it with some LOCTITE 592. That way you will not have to deal with an annoying leak that is sure to come.

maybe I'm just lucky but I've never used tape or any other sealer on a temp sender and never had a leak
