TORSION BAR THOUGHTS '71 GTX

Car is stock.The front end was rebuilt a few years ago.440 Eng.stock front end nothing special.

Just t bars ain't gonna do it. A t bar is a spring. A bigger bar means a stiffer ride. You have to address the system as a whole.

When I did my 72 Charger and 71 Road Runner I went with MP .96 bars and a Helwig 1-1/4" Big improvement and what I saved using the MP bars bought the sway bar.

I'd try a bigger sway bar first, and maybe a different set of shocks. If that doesn't suit you, then I'd step up and replace the bars.

Larger sway bar, poly bushings, quicker ratio steering box, sub frame connectors, RCD/Bilstein shocks - all can provide for better handling. Easiest to start is sway bar and shocks. Gone on from there if you feel the need.

Assuming ALL your steering & suspension components are in good condition. A bigger bar means getting a better shock absorber, the shock controls the spring action. Stiffen the lower control arms. Get as much positive caster, and adjust neg camber to at least .5.. For steering, a firm feel box with thicker tie rod ends.

i did the FF steering box and upper control arms. it really does steer now.
moog make a offset bushing for stock upper arms if you don't go with FF ones.
i added also summit stab bars front and back.

The ride will be stiffer with a larger torsion bar naturally, but the ride will be by no means tooth jarring. If anything is will give you a more modern feel and with a proper alignment with updated specs. You will have more of the tread firmly planted on the pavement. Since the release of our 1.03" torsion bars we have sold 1700 sets and 101 sets just this year. If the ride was that harsh I do not think we would be selling them as the rate we are. With the members discount they are $215 and shipping is free with in the US 48 States.

The .96" bars are $349 but with discount the cost is $314. Now I do get the question every time with comes up " why are the 1.03" so much cheaper than the .96" The reason being is simply supply and demand. The sales each year of the 1.03 bars are triple or more the sales of all our other bars combined. So naturally the more quantity that I have made by our forge the lower the cost to us and we can past the savings on the consumers.

Yes these bars are forged right here is the USA and have been engineer with the correct 20 degree so that they can be install exactly as outline in your factory service manual.

I have 1.12" bars and I should have gone bigger, way less body roll and I barely noticed a difference in ride comfort - don't go less than pst 1.03" and you won't find them cheaper, the bars I'm running are firmfeel, I agree with T2R9, the biggest improvement was going to the 1.25" front sway bar, hellwig are the cheapest from http://www.sdtrucksprings.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=16954 the price is dirt cheap and if you wait till a major holiday, they have even more savings - you'd be insane not to buy it at their price!!!

I'll give PST a plug for their 1.03" bars. I was apprehensive about going with the 1.03 just because they are so much larger than stock and I was afraid of a harsh ride. Put them in my last project car and couldn't be happier with the results. Everyone that drives the car comments on how nice the ride is.
