My seat restoration (72 Charger Rallye)

Nice work, seats look like quite a challenge.

Thank you sir. The job isn't difficult. I am probably going a little overboard with powder coat. But I figured that when the seat needs redone in 10 years(hopefully longer), that it won't need painted ever again.

Originally the seat foam was hog ringed to the seat springs, but I decided to use the muslin to hold the foam in place. It seamed to work quite well. Although you can seen in one of the pictures that I glued the sides of the bottom in the wrong place. So instead of risking damage to the foam, I just trimmed tge muslin with a razor blade. There was still enough material to attach to the frame.

I will be out of town for the next week. So when I get back, I'll finish up the seat top and do a side by side shot of the finished driver's seat and the unfinished passenger's seat.

The feeling of accomplishment is creeping up on me, hopefully I don't screw anything up.

Update on the seat top. It was quite a chore. On and off 4 times . Thats hog rings off and on 4 times.... But after 3 hours of wresting with the cover, im satisfied with the results . I may use some steam to finish it off before cutting the holes to assemble the seat. Here are some picture's of the process. I made new listing wires for all (3) listing pockets. I ended up cutting the listing pocket groove further down so that the cover wouldn't be sloppy under the head rest. It helped out allot, as the listing groove milded into the foam didn't seem to be long enough. Or the cover was off. Either way it worked well to fix the problem.

Here you can see the groove is cut longer ^^

You are a far more patient man than I sir.

Looks great!

After a few weeks off. I finished up the driver's seat. The car didn't have seat back screws or even seat back covers. I am using oem used seat back (plastic) covers that I got from the nats in 2012. I have yet to buy any screws yet. So the picture is just to show what it would look like all reassembled. I did purchase and install the oil board washers between the upper and lower seat assembly's. When dismantling this seat there was only one spacer for the catch on the bottom seat. As I reassembled the seat, I found that I need 2 spacers to get the latch to contact the catch and lock the two together. I have access to steel and will make another spacer as it won't be seen after its all togther.

Final thoughts. The seat bottom went together very well. Extremely happy with the fit of the bottom. The top however was very difficult. I wished I would've cut the grooves in the foam further toward the bottom and attach it even further down as there is a noticible pucker on the driver's side edge. My advice is set aside plenty of time and make sure you are happy with the fit before you do any cutting. Also if you remove the latch mechanism to paint, remember to install it before hog ringing your cover on the frame. Yes I learned the hard way. I will post the passenger seat with maybe some highlights of things I will do different.

I hope this helps someone out there. And if you know a better way of doing it, please share and help all our fellow men and women out.

Question I can't get a straight answer to. On 72 Charger on roof insignia does the arrow badge point forward or back . Seen it every way. If you look at a 73 with the long side stripe, it points to the front. Can't find a factory pic anywhere.

The Reference Guide wasn't much help.
So I went out to the garage to look at mine.

I took some pictures. Idk if you have the original ones or not. Mine are. I have the holes in the sail panels still.

With that being said, I think the arrow points to the rear on the passenger side. I say this because the pins are offset on the arrow emblems. If you flipp the arrow over it touches the Charger badge. Since I think there should be a gap between the 2 badges and they both line up , I think the pass side faces forward and drivers faces to the rear.
