Hi all,

After 33 years owning our 69 Sport Satellite, i've only just noticed that some GTX / roadrunners have different 'text' on the clear lens to ours!
There's a nicely restored complete dash on ebay that i was looking at and noticed it has extra wording at the bottom - namely 'LIGHTS', 'WASHER' 'WIPER' & 'PANEL', whereas our original doesnt have any wording at the bottom - just the 'ALTERNATOR', 'GASOLINE' & 'TEMPERATURE' above those gauges.

Can anyone explain what models had these, to me, unnecessary additional labels? Or were they added later in the model year?

Couple of pics: ours first, ebay offering second

Thanks

'68 versus '69

I was wondering if ours is an early 69 version, and they changed later in the model year. Is that what you're suggesting Stanton?

Mind you, our is an export model that was shipped straight to Europe (it was imported to the UK from Belgium in 1977), so we were also wondering if export models had different spec dashes, like the speedo markings being 1,2,3-15, rather than 10,20,30-120...

Edit - i've looked thru a bunch of ebay ads for 68 and 69 satellite/gtx's and it does appear that all 68s are like ours (ie without the superfluous labels at the bottom) and 69s have a mixture - some with and some without, so i'll go with the theory that ours is an earlier 69 model and has the 68 style dash

My '69 Sport Satellite was made somewhere around July of 1969, which I would think was later in the model year. It came with 2 different gauge clusters when I bought it, one installed and I believe the original in the trunk, which I've since had restored and put back in the dash. Neither cluster that came with it had the additional labels on the lens.

Rats - there goes my theory then!

Well, your theory might still be correct. What plant was your car built in? It "could" be that one plant ran out of the '68 style gauge clusters (440sportsatellite's) long before your car's plant ran out of '68 gauge clusters.....I would suspect that the plants didn't run out of gauge clusters from '68 at "exactly" the same time before switching to the '69-style....OR, "maybe" they just grabbed whatever cluster was on the shelf & one plant rotated their stock better than the other plant, so one plant's '68-style clusters just kept getting shoved further back on the shelf until one day they ran low of clusters and actually used a '68-style that had been shoved in the back.

UK maxie, is your speedometer 150 MILES per hour or kilometer? Export to Europe, I was wondering if that is the difference.

Thanks - ours was built at Lynch Road, Oct 3rd if I've decoded correctly (A03 where the build date should be), so Oct 68, I presume.

Yes it is MPH! So 150 mph is a bit optimistic to say the least!
Looking at the 68s and 69s on ebay, it looks like a lot of the earlier dashes have 1-15 instead of 10-120

1968 used three digit numbering, while the 1969s dropped the last digit.

or.... there's this 68 GTX on ebay at the mo....

'single' digit numbers WITHOUT extra text

Wow, now I'm thoroughly confused. In this thread we see:
2 digit 150 without extra printing
3 digit 120 with printing
3 digit 150 without
2 digit 150 without
An a12 2digit 150 with
Mine is an April build a12 3digit 120 without
Assuming posted a12 is legit (I know mine is) what in the world determined who got what? All a12s are lynch road built on one of only two days.
Next, what determines 120mph or 150? Gearing? A/c?

I was under the impression that the 150mph speedo's were only on the GTX. Both of the clusters that came with my car are 120mph.
Of course, it's always possible that neither of those clusters were original to my car. The guy I bought it from said the one in the trunk was in the dash when he bought it but who knows if it was replaced before then.

I'm almost 100% sure our has never been changed so that's a 318, 3.23 rear, 904 auto, with a 150 mph speedo, while an A12 'runner on gets a 120 mph speedo?
Although, being a Sport Satellite and a 'Premium' car line (R'P' on the fender tag), maybe it gets what the GTX would get?

69 sport satellite untouched original. My car not some ebay trash thats been cobbled together. That isnt the best place to get reference photos. As was said GTX and Coronet R/T got the 150. Everything else got the 120. Anything you find different has been changed. The Superbee came with the rally dash and the RT was optional but the Plymouth only had the sweep dash.
