can you tell me why are you guys going to 17 inch rims, doesnt that mess up your speedometer?

Lots of us want larger disc brakes, different styles, or looks. Tire circumference affects the speedo and smaller aspect ratio tires can deal with that, although it's not difficult to correct speedo drive gearing.

The outer diameter of the tire is what sets the speedometer readout. I bought 17's for my Charger, going to 40 and 45 aspect ratio to keep the height/diameter of the tires similar to stock. There are calculators on the web that can help figure out what speedometer drive gear to use when changing tires to non stock diameters.

Ummm... a question with obvious answers? We want better handling, bigger brakes and like the looks although mine are 18"s and 19"s. I cheated on the speedo though, my speedo runs off of GPS.. accurate no matter what I do.

I built an excel spreadsheet that gives me basic diameter, width, and section height of any tire I put in. For most of my cars, I had entered the stock tire size then entered the tires I wanted to install to see what was closest to the diameter.

For the Plymouth, it doesn't matter - I have Dakota Digital gauges and can program them. But as others stated, it's mostly for bigger brakes and better handling - and the one thing I don't think was mentioned: more tire size options.

Years ago, everyone had 50 series tires for musclecars, now the only 15-inch tire size you can get in a 50 series is 295/50-R15 for the rear. I liked having wider tires all the way around, these days they don't have the tire choices anymore for 15-inch wheels.

Kinda miss the old days of the A-N, 70/60/50 series tires. lol

Well of COURSE there's still choices in 15" rims! Folks are running 295 width and such on the rears of them without
suspension modifications, after all. I have 275's on mine and they look like they came on the thing.
These old rascals look their best with some sidewall to 'em. Ricer wheels/tires belong on...well, ricers IMO.
These aren't Hot Wheels or model cars, after all. :)

To each their own, your car looks great and I do love the 15" look as well but I sure like a firm feel in the corners. Just to clear up the "ricer wheel/tire" comment, I'm pretty sure if you look around at ALL the newer cars they ALL run a very significantly shorter sidewall even trucks and for good reason... they handle better!

I'd hardly say my car is a "ricer"... I raced on the 15" wheels, and now with 18" wheels. I've upgraded brakes and suspension, and I run the track 11 seconds faster now.
Big difference. When I first went to 18" wheels, I wasn't sure I'd like it. Now I think they're right at home on the car.

I want to get the stock look for my 70 Roadrunner by adding a set of Magnum 500s and New tires. Any suggestions on tire and rim size ? I was leaning towards 15 inch rims but could appreciate some suggestions

Here is a couple shots of my car. It currently has American Racing wheels 15 inch 70s on the front and 60s on the back . Not a fan of the current tire/rim combo that's why I am asking for some input on hanging back to a stock look

For a 15" wheel probably not a lot more than 200-225 for stock. You can do 235 without worry in the front (possibly a lil more), 60/15 front and rear.

I'm current running 235/60/15 - front & 255/60/15 - rear.

On my 70 Satellite I wanted more of a "Hot Wheels" look with a bigger rear tire and rim with a smaller front tire and rim...
Fronts are a standard 15x7 with 225/70's...
The rears are 17x 9.5 with 5.5 backspace...My SS springs and are moved back 3/4" at the spring mount in the front. The rear tires are 275/60's measuring 30" tall...
The section width is about 11 1/2" and the tread is about 9 1/2"...You can't put anything any bigger under this without working on the inner and outer wheel-houses...
As far as the speedometer my trans had a speedometer gear in it for a 2.94 rear gear...
These tires are roughly 4" larger in diameter than a 26" "stock" tire.
I added 3.23 gears when I built the car...
1" of tire is supposedly about 6 points of gear...All things equal I have a 3.23 - .24 for 6 points of gear for every inch larger than 26" with turns out to be a 2.99 final ratio. With the speedometer gear for a 2.94 my car runs within about 1 mph of being correct at about 60 mph.
You can change tire size...gear ratio and the speedometer gear in the transmission to do whatever you need it to do...

What GPS system do you use?

I bought all Autometer gauges so I went ahead and bought their GPS setup as well. So far it's been very dependable.
