And at the tender you age of 62. Last weekend I took off the heads then it got so cold it would freeze the balls off a brass monkey. Back to mid fifties today. I took everything out but the cam, That I will have to read about. The bearings on the #1 rod to the crank were welded together in one circle and wouldn't come apart.

I do kind of feel like a big shot now.

Good job SS. Hope you have some good ref. books too.

Pictures!
Doesn't it feel good to do this work yourself! The best part is when you go back together and it actually works!
Or the crappy part you go back together and one of the Piston s miss you so much the come back out to see you!

I've built a few. I'm no expert but I've never had one come apart!
It is a satisfying feeling to take a pile of parts and make a working machine out of it. Good luck with the project.

You didn't specify what picture you wanted...I just thought I'd try to help.

I've torn down a couple but have never rebuilt an engine or trans.
Lately I've been helping some in a boat shop, getting some time in servicing Honda outboards. Worked a couple of the bigger V-6 motors, pulling the lower drives apart too & servicing. Just got done with a fairly new Honda 3 banger, carbureted 4 stroke. Top cylinder was not firing so pulled carbs(3)& manifold assembly, tore carbs apart, sonic bathed, reassembled with all new o rings, emulsifier tubes, needle valves yata yata, put everything back together & it's running real nice on all 3 cans.......rack one up to learning something new.

Dude....you ARE a big shot now! Do you know how many people can barely work a screwdriver? For the camshaft, this is what you do:
a. remove timing cover
b. remove timing chain
c. re-attach cam gear from timing chain back on camshaft
d. make sure that all the lifters are pushed up & out of the way of the camshaft lobes. (removed completely is best. If they are stuck, then let us know here and we will help you)
e. using cam gear, pull forward & the cam should slip right out the front.

BRAVO SIR!!!!

SS- feels good huh? The rebuilds I’ve done were before Al Gore thought of the internet! Jeez, that seems ancient!

That is great, and I bet you had fun. I agree with PurpleBeeper seems no one wants to turn a wrench anymore. And if you can everyone will call you to help them.

You didn't say what motor, so if a big block, don't forget tp remove the fuel pump rod before the cam. If it is a small block, don't forget the pipe plug behind the driver side lifter galley inside of the motor.

You have done the easy part.Need to reassemble correct the 1st time unless some mocking up is involved where it could be done 3 or 4 times.
EVERYTHING must be measured properly to asses what is needed for reassemby.New bearings must be checked for proper clearance. The more precise you are the longer and better the finished product will last AND perform!
