Has anyone seen markings like this on a horn button before? My car is a 999 paint code '68 road runner in Petty Blue. I know that only a handful were produced in that colour, but other than that details are pretty sketchy. This button is obviously a factory piece but with extra detail. I am always astounded by the wealth of information on this site and am hoping someone may be able to answer this question.

How long have you owned the car? The reason I ask is because that horn button looks as though it's been restored and those marks are simply areas that were overlooked. The ink/paint on the backside of those horn button caps is extremely delicate. I made the mistake of wiping mine with alcohol...ended up restoring it. Another thing I notice, the outer ridged ring is silver on Dodge buttons. Not sure if it's the same for Plymouth.

I've owned it since '13. The car is very original and kinda ruff. The button doesn't appear to have been touched.

You could gently pop it out and take a look at the backside. I agree, the marks are strange, but are not factory (although the mark in the lower left certainly looks like a fratzog). Possibly some grit or dirt back inside the horn pad?

I'm not sure what you guys are looking at, but it looks like a standard Plymouth centre cap medallion to me.

Apart from that, all I see are scratches or damage to the lens. Here's the one that was on my GTX;

On either side of the Plymouth logo. It is definitely painted in white on the back side of the plastic. Cert 14 I was always under the impression that there were only 10 of these cars made. The number 14 may indicate that there were more.

I would hazard a guess that it's just the injection mould cavity number, etc showing through from the back due to paint deterioration

If you enlarge the pic to get more detail you'll see that it was put there when the part was made.

It's actually painted on the back surface of the plastic.

OK, I can see what you are saying.. Let's see the fender tag and build sheet if you have them.
Maybe some more clues lay within those documents.

I'll dig up a scan of the broadcast sheet. The fender tag is rusted off.

I am thinking that the number of factory painted 68 Petty Blue Road Runners were actually much greater than 10 or 14. Being from the North Georgia area, there were at least three of them floating around this area in the early 90s. The one that was last here was local to our area from 1969 to just several years ago when it disappeared. They were a marketing tool for Plymouth and NASCAR, so the targeted audience was the South Eastern states.

As for options on these Road Runners, other than the paint code and color, they were standard Road Runners. The horn center cap as pictured above was the one found on the deluxe wood grain wheel from that time frame. Most of the Road Runners had the base color coded wheel with the center horn button. Even the three spoke partial ring was an upgrade for these cars.

Do you have any history on the car? I would have loved to have gotten the local car, but just too many in the mix.

I was hoping someone from Georgia would chime in. This car was from Jasper, Ga. Last titled in 1981. The production number on the vin is quite low so if the 14 on the button indicates the sequence of 999 cars then there are likely quite a few more. This one has several options rarely seen on road runners. Décor package interior with factory tach, wheel lip and rocker panel mouldings, big rad and viscous fan for example. I have never seen markings like this on any other horn button and am quite curious as to their significance.

Does the decor pkg get you the upgrade wheel?

Stamping a horn button with a special run sequence number just doesn't sound right to me.

I don't think you can argue, based on the pics, that this is not a "Petty blue" car.
Pics of the factory paint are priceless on "999" cars as the 999 doesn't actually tell the color!

This is most probably the same car that was in our area. Back in the day, 1968 to 1973, my parents owned the local service station in Tate which is actually just South of Jasper. During that time frame, it was the local gathering point for the stronger cars of the day. This Road Runner was pretty much traded back and forth in the early 70s within the same group of a family. The owners were actually from Marble Hill which is just East of Jasper.

The car was eventually towed to Lawson Chrevolet site where it sat until it was eventually sold. When I was looking into it, the son of the owner was working for the dealership and he told me that his intent was to restore the car for his children.

I am pretty sure that the car is an original Petty Blue car and is probably an original paint car. Back in those days, the cars were cheap and were just transportation. I know in the 71 to 74 time frame, those cars were beat on unmercifully and the car shows the battle wounds.

Both of the owners back in the day that I am aware of have passed on during the past couple of years. But hopefully you can bring the car back to its glory days as the car will be a stunner once finished.
