Is there a difference in the base and RT/500 extensions? Can you post a pic? I have the trim & taillights for a 500 and just holding ot up there it doesnt look right. Is the trunk different where the RT/500 trim mounts?
Thanks

No. There is no difference. The R/T and the 500 both use the same tail light, tail light grill, and center panel. The difference is in the insert towards the right side of the center panel. One says R/T and the other says 500. The 440 uses different lenses with chrome trim lines and a different center trunk panel. The extensions are the same throughout. If what you have looks different then you very likely have a 1966 Coronet extension.
The white one is a 1967 Coronet extension. The red one is a 1966 Coronet extension.

The R/T and 500 extension upper lip angle is covered by the chrome grill straight upper edge. The 440 light lens is the same shape as the others but without the chrome grill cover you can now see the wedge shaped lip of the upper edge of the extension. The 66 doesn't have the backing plate to mount the lens to.

Thank GR!
I'm trying to figure out if there is an actual physical difference in the extensions. My 500 taillight " grill" sits perfect in mine but the mountung holes don't appear to line up.

Keep in mind that which ever extension you use there is a plastic paint gasket that fits in between the extension and the quarter because of dissimilar metals being next to each other. Here's the back of my 67 Coronet....

I definitley have 67 extensions and I know the 500 & RT are the same except for the badge.
So the question is will the RT/500 tail trim fit a base model 67 extension?

Which extension does yours resemble?

Yes, they will. They are all the same basic piece of pot metal and shaped identically. If your holes don't quite match up perhaps either the extension, or, your quarter was hit at some point in the past, or, you have a 66 quarter on a 67 car.

Another possibility is that someone replaced broken mounting studs on your extension and put them in the wrong locations.

Thanks, its the mounting holes inside of the extension that don't line up with the mounting holes in the grill. Or I'm mistaking that the grill/trim mounts through those holes. The extension has 3 and IIRC the grill has 5.
My manual does not show a detail of the taillight assembly.

Are you talking about the mounting holes for the extension itself or the lens? Here's what the mounting bolts look like and their positions. And the holes for them in the quarters. four bolts.

Mine has been modified a little....for 1966 Thunderbird tail lights.

The pan that the bulb screws into has the three mounting studs that go through the extension. The rest mounts to that pan.

You Da Man!!!! That's exactly what I needed!!!
Thanks for the help!!!
Your very welcome. Yeah, without the reflector base they don't look like they go together at all.
That's what those long studs are for, they screw into the chrome bezel and the red lenses sits in the bezel then the suds extend through the reflector base and are fastened on and then the whole thing goes into the extension.

As luck would have it I'm parting a 67 Coronet 440 model. All Coronet's use the same extension. The housings and lenses are different. See pics .
