Well, looks like I'm going to eat it on an AMD fender that I bought through Summit Racing. Fender was shipped FedEx freight in a huge box, but also had form fitted cardboard fastened to the fender. I did open the box and inspected the fender for damage...no marks on any cardboard so I signed for delivery. Big mistake!

Pulled the formed cardboard off later and found a nice 6x6 dent in the upper mid portion of the fender. I filed a concealed damage claim with FedEx, waited 15 days, and received an investigation report stating that they'd pay $40 based on $1 per pound.

I blame myself, but want to prevent this from ever happening again. If you inspect a fender and find damage before accepting delivery........what is the best way to handle this?

They pay a $1 per pound for USED or undeclared value items. Standard freight policy. That said Summit should have marked the bill of landing with a true insured value for new stuff... something to discuss at LENGTH with them!

File damage with Summit?? FedEx may not have damaged it. You indicated no damage to the box.
I always take pictures of the box when delivered and on metal parts I unbox completely before I sign. Also pictures are taken of the unboxing process. The driver still gets paid, if it upsets him or her to wait, so what. To many parts get delivered to my shop, they expect it. Damage does have to be on the driver's copy of the receipt to get a real settlement.

Big parts like that I will pick up at FedEx and have a worker witness the unpacking.

If the box is dropped on the floor and lands flat on a clean floor box will not show damage but inside can be junk

Troubling to read problems with merchants I trust. Would like to see a picture of the dent. Never a resolution that satisfies. I’m guilty too of not properly inspection on delivery.

Sorry to hear of damaged goods! We all need to be very careful and inspect so we don't
get hammered.

It went like this - ordered through Summit, shipped out by AMD, delivered by Fed Ex.

Since I have another fender on back order, I'll thoroughly inspect it when it arrives.....If I find damage what's the best thing to do?

When filing the damage claim with FedEx, they request an invoice for the product, a copy of the BOL, and pictures if possible. I submitted everything that they asked for. Their findings.....$1 per pound.

Because Summit /AMD didn't declare a value in the correct spot on their bill of lading! Bin Der.. done dat. Got f'd for a $30,000 pair of aircraft floats, that Yellow Freight destroyed, because the shipper didn't declare the value in the correct spot. $1/pound and I got $371 !

I think this is what happened.....the Bill of lading has no dollar value on it. Maybe I should have bought directly from AMD?

Like I said.. throw it back into AMD/Summit's lap to send you a new fender or cover the damage costs. They didn't do their job at their end to cover the products delivery to you.

Have you actually spoken to Summit? I'd be surprised if they refused to be of help.

Something like that part should have been clearly marked as "Fragile" or "Handle with care" ....although that can also make it a target for jealous SOB's who just love smashing other people's stuff.

Sometimes it's easier to just suck it up and learn from the experience. Otherwise you waste hours of stress and get nowhere. That dent might pop back out - maybe a paintless dent guy could fix it for the $40?

I contacted Summit initially through their on-line chat, not that helpful. I just sent an email with pictures attached.

AMD ships fenders in a well marked box, problem is that it's huge. The fender is itself wrapped in cardboard and bubble wrap, but it's floating around in a huge box.
