Need some help from you guys. From what I’ve researched, the steering wheel in my 69 Roadrunner is not correct. Maybe mine has a coronet horn button? Pics of my current setup are below. Any opinions? I’m guessing there isn’t a Roadrunner horn button I can just put on this current steering wheel is there? Next option would be for me to find the other style wheel that uses the 2/3 horn ring with a Roadrunner horn pad. Thanks!

There is a Road Runner version of that, but that isn’t it. I should be able to find a picture in a bit, I had a RR that had the correct one. As I understand it, these were used on the very basic interior, typically for a post car. I do not think that the upholstery on your seat would be a match with this type of plain wheel.

Reference above, I am very sure of the correctness in the picture I posted, note the cross hatch seat material and matching door panels. This was on an A12 post car, an early build.

Kowal, thanks for the info. I agree, mine does have the higher grade seat covers so it probably deserves a different steering wheel all together. I wasn’t sure if it just warranted a horn button change but appears I need to swap out the whole thing. My car is a hard top car also.

There were four different steering wheels for a 69 roadrunner. Basic horn button, half ring, full ring , and simulated wood. Upper grade upholstery came with a horn ring wheel, but wood was optional. Do you have a broadcast sheet?

The wheel currently on your RR is a 1970 wheel. Since your car is a '69 RM23 it would probably have come with the black deluxe half horn ring wheel or the sport woodgrain wheel. What it would not have come with is the wheel Kowal pictured above. That was used only on RM21 cars WITHOUT the A87 RR Décor Package.

My RR is a bottom end model with the interior as shown in the photo. In fact, mine was even one notch lower ... no tach !!!

No broadcast sheet unfortunately, just the fender tag so hard to say for certain I guess. So I could get the correct basic horn button that would make it proper for a Roadrunner but more then likely that plain wheel/button was used with the basic interior generally seen in post cars. Is that a correct assumption? I’m leaning towards getting the partial horn ring with the pad that holds the road runner medallion in the center.

Thanks, you have confirmed what I was thinking. Do you know what my current horn button is for? I guess I will end up selling this wheel once I get the correct one with partial horn ring. It’s a shame, this wheel I have is a nice one. Just not correct for mine unfortunately.

Where was your car built? (RM23H9?) I have a lynch road car, and i think it has the A87 decor on the fender tag. I cant be sure cause im away from my car at the moment. I am lucky enough to have a broadcast, mine has the same seats as yours, the A87 decor package, and has the padded three spoke with half horn ring. I think thats what yours should most likely have.
The reason i ask where it was built, each plant had differences in layout of fender tag , and what was listed on them regarding options.

Mine is a St Louis built car(just 20 miles away lol) but I would consider it an early one....RM23H9G106156. Mine does not list the A87 option on the fender tag tho. Always a lot of unknowns without the actual broadcast sheet I guess. Looks like I’ll be on the hunt for a nice partial horn ring/pad and go with the most probable option. I already know of a couple good steering wheels available.

That's because it cannot. You have a hardtop. RM23. These RRs were based on the Satellite. It already has the upgraded interior from the Satellite trim level.

The A87 option came only on RM21 post (coupe) cars. They were based on the Belvedere. These cars had lower level trim. If the A87 was added to a post car then the interior got upgraded to the Satellite trim level.
