This question is on my old 360,i bought back from a fellow mopar nut, that never ran her. I sent it out to degree the cam which is comp 268,1 thing i notice was when its at tdc ready to fire, when the dots are at 6 cam and 12 crank the line on my dampener is not at 0 on the timing chain cover, its at 8 degrees.in the past when i slid my own cam in, booth dots at 6 and 12 that line on the dampener line right at 0 on the case.whats your thoughts.

Well, it can be:
  • Wrong Damper
  • Wrong timing pointer (cover?)
  • Balancer outer ring has slipped

damper, cover are original parts,it sounds like the ring has slip the guy who degree the cam is well known, one would think he should of told me so.thanks for the reply.

Hi,

Find TDC on the number 1 cylinder and then check/verify the timing mark. The alignment marks on the sprockets don't indicate TDC, they are relative to the cam grind.

well it like - 50 lol hear its on my engine stand will check once it warms up.hopen to get it in this spring.thanks bro

Having the outer ring slip is not an uncommon occurrence.
Replacement dampers should not be hard to find. That will likely correct your problem.

Verify TDC with a degree wheel using a dial indicator or piston stop. Degree the cam. Now lock the crank at TDC. To do this run a long bolt thru the crank flange so it contacts the rear main cap. Be gentile, just enough to stop rotation. Slide the timing cover and balancer on. Check the damper. If it's only off a degree or two, no biggie. You can compensate when you set the timing. If is off a ton, replace it.
