Working on a 73 Imperial. Trying to get down to the ignition tumbler cause its jammed and cannot turn it with the key and get it unlocked to get it out of park. What is the little metal box piece to the left that looks like it has a tab on it u bend up to unloosen the turn signal piece to come out? It moves when you pull or move the turn signal lever so its connected to that some how. How do I get it out?

I circled the part that I am asking about in blue line that I think is holding up the cancellation arm.

Thanks,

Wizard

I'm referring to the shift linkage.
Yes, I know but the key tumbler is unable to move which is gonna prevent you from moving the column shifter at all. Colum shifter is wiggly and has some movement but the tumbler is unable to turn to the accessories on position or start position which is why you cant move it out of park

Did you try disconnecting the shift linkage anywhere to free up the column?

No, that's not really the problem. You cannot turn the ignition switch either way forward or backward. Its jammed. It needs fixed anyways to drive the car. There is no little holes in the tumbler or near the tumbler around the columb to stick a wire into it and release it. Looks like u have to keep going down into the coloumb to get at it.

Is this a Tilt Column?

Yes, tilt and telescopic steering. 73 Imperial. I took all the screws out I could see but that lever does not come out. It does unscrew though. I did not unscrew it complety yet though

Are you sure you have the right key? Or is the key too worn to engage the pins in the lock? I’ve ran into both of these problems.

I had some numb-skull put the trunk key in my ignition once....jammed it up real good. Took me about an hour to carefully remove it.

I finally got the ignition tumbler out. It is jammed and will not turn with key in it. Is there some way to see if its the wrong key? Previous owner says it is but who knows. Tried all the keys. Also, the round headed key don't open the trunk. If not there are plenty of them for sale on E-bay. Anywhere else to buy one? Also, I think these can be refurbished. Any way to take it apart and see what is jamming it up? Any way to get a new key for it to ensure the key is the right key before buying a whole new ignition tumbler? Their pretty cheap but I always like to try to fix something if I can.

I assume you take the lock apart and measure the pins then cut a key blank to fit the pins. If the trunk key doesn’t fit either, I’d bet you have the wrong keys. I’d like to find a locksmith that can rekey these old locks to fit existing keys. I’d guess these old pins aren’t available any more unless you could make them.
