I have a complete 400 engine in my shop that I would like to know what it originally came from. It's a 530 casting from December 77. Is there any way to know what this engine was originally installed in? Thanks
I'll take a look in a bit. I still have to close up the shop for the night. It's really not important. Just for my own personal curiosity/history sake. The engine was pulled from a Dodge truck but was possibly not original to it.I think 400's are like 440 and 383's, if so look just about where the oil pan bolts on, there should be a flat machined pad that might have some VIN numbers on it, that might provide some information.
So there's an extremely good chance that this is a 6pk 400 hemi from a 77 superbird Volare!!!???Engine ID stamp is only the last 8 digits of the VIN so, nope. Unless someone knows of a way to find the exact model using the serial number but I didn't think that was possible.

Back up there Mr Mopar. One of one...I think not! Your car was a pieced together deal by Mr Norm. This is the engine from the pilot car. It was actually spawned from Richard Petty's DNA, and was piloted by Lee Ioccoca's illegitimate grandson. The adjustable rockers are a dead giveaway. Nice try though.Probably not as I have the only known ever to exist 1977 6pk 400 hemi super bird Volare, and there isn’t two of them.....

What has me curious about this engine is the oil pan. The guy I got it from said it was pulled from a Dodge truck and the carcass was sitting behind his shop. The engine has a center sump pan though. I thought trucks and RVs had a rear sump pan. The truck carcass was a 2wd. Could a center sump pan even fit?
Could've been from a Cordoba/Magnum, police/service vehicle or one of the land yacht models. Oh boy those late 70s Furys were fun to park....What has me curious about this engine is the oil pan.
