Tailgate material for 64 Plymouth wagon

Most of the interior in my wagon is either in good shape, or is something that I can repair/replace fairly easily. However there are a few things that are proving difficult.

One area that needs attention is the hardi board type cover for the interior of the tailgate. As you can tell, 56 years of kids climbing in and out of the way back have not been kind to this specific piece.

I didn't expect to find a direct replacement, but for some reason though I am having a heck of a time finding material that is similar.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Looking for suggestions.

They sell a very similar wood at home depot. Its super thin and brown like you find behind cabinets. And almost the same as door panel backing.

This has come up before, and someone posted pics of material they got at Lowes, iirc. It was a different material, a hardboard I believe, looked like fabric but not.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, it doesn't have the same design/texture as what came on the car. But at this point I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that whatever I end up with is not going to be like what came in the car originally.

I assumed it was like a door panel,has a vinyl cover that kind of has the pattern melted into it.

I replaced mine with 10 gauge aluminum. You could cover that with any type of material.

When i first saw your picture, what flashed through my mind was trunk mat material from a 55-57 chevy. I know it's a dirty word around here, but maybe something repoped for a shoebox Chevy wagon could work?
Edit: black thick rubber, with about a half inch between grooves? See if you can get a picture of a 55 Chevy trunk mat on line. Danchuck offers the rubber mat without the sedans stock spare tire cutout. Full width of the trunk should be wide enough for a tailgate.

I actually removed it from my tailgate and the dang thing broke into a number of pieces.

You described the surface perfectly. I think that as long as I can get something that doesn't look like it belongs in a kitchen, but rather fits in with the rest of the car I'll be happy.

You could get the plywood I posted above and coat it with bedliner. buy some pin striping tape and copy the lines onto the board then bedliner it and peel off the pattern. The pattern would be the low point and the bedliner would be the high point.

They now tint bedliner...

I'd like to go to one of the local home improvement stores this weekend and just look around to see what they may have, but the lines to get into the store are ridiculous.
