Power steering gearbox question

Do the test that YY1 states with the front wheels off the ground. That will let you know if that valve needs centered.

Loosen the bolts but let them remain a little snug. They still have to seal the prongs under the block while at pressure. Use a hammer and wood block to tap it one direction along the axis of the steering gear. It will either get better on not turning (right direction to adjust) or worse. If worse tap the other direction.

Its fairly easy. Go in small movements

The alignment guy told me the gearbox was pulling, so I took his word for it. When I got it home, I jacked up the front end, started the car up & the wheel stays centered. Looks like I'm a victim of a shitty alignment.

Time to go elsewhere.

See post #8 :p

Interesting, I've never heard of this. I've restored a few cars and even after the front end alignment is completed the car wants to pull Left or Right.

Hello from Melbourne down under. I had the exact same problem after replacing the steering box. Took me a few goes to finally position the valve on top of the box right as kiwigtx has shown. Good luck. Stay safe in these terrible times.

My cars pulling to the right ever so slightly. Do you recall which way you had to move yours to correct it?

Hey bad88ttop
Mine was also pulling to the right/passenger side.
With the front tires off the ground, and engine running the tires would slowly turn to the right.
I had to loosen and push the housing to the left/drivers side.

Been there more than once!! That's when I decided to learn how to do my own alignments.....

The biggest thing that would piss me off is when leaving the alignment shop you find the steering wheel crooked. That's when you know you've been to a bad shop or a half assed alignment tech. I'd turn right around and take it back. They'd get an ear full and I'd stand right there while the guy corrected it.

I worked for a couple of garages that didn't have a front end machine and had to farm them out. I did learn on a new Bear machine in VoTech and knew what I was talking about. It's amazing who you will find working on cars, ripping people off with their half assed work.

I just took the car to a different alignment shop last week & now the car tracks nice & straight.

Before & after.....

I did a rough alignment today and all if a sudden it's pulling to the right.
Wheels off the ground, steering wheel goes all the way to the right from any starting point.
Didn't pull to the right at all before today.
Everything is new, just over 300 miles on car.

Can someone post a visual of this adjustment?

I've read the FSM and numerous threads and my tiny brain isn't getting it.

Loosen the two bolts in the circle and lightly tap the cover to one side or the other.

If you adjust that KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE WHEEL when you start the engine!

I found out the hard way in the mid 70's lol and you can pull the coil wire and just turning the engine over with the starter will tell ya if you're close.....

With the front tires off the ground, I loosened the two bolts and it wouldn't budge at all, left, right, back, forth, nothing. Tried a small prybar with a tiny amount of force, nothing.
It did leak a little fluid.

Tightened the bolts back down, started car, wheels still off the ground, steering wheel doesn't move at all in any position.

Don't know what the deal is, but the issue is gone.
