Craftsman Torque Wrench

So I have a Craftsman torque wrench that is not working correctly. Does Craftsman still exist? Are torque wrenches covered with lifetime warranty?

Yes if in stock at store (Lowe's, Ace, etc) they will replace.

I bought a Craftsman torque wrench online, brand new in the package. Went with that brand specifically because of its past high quality reputation and lifetime warranty.
It arrives, and says on the package there’s a two year warranty. What?
On the back of the package, very fine print: made in China.

My Craftsman failed right after the warranty. I'm done with craftsman.

Funny my Harbor Freight torque wrenches have never failed!

I have been done with Craftsman for a long time. This TR was probably the last thing I have purchased......

Good question actually. It won’t lock on its set point. It’s plastic junk.

I actually saw an independant test of a bunch of torque wrenches (think it was on you tube) that raved about the horror freight wrench. Said it was as accurate as a snap on. I am not in any way comparing the quality of the two, but for an occasional use, i am happy with mine. Just make sure to un-dial the setting before you put it away.

I use HF torque wrenches all the time. Not sure I would trust them on a rolling assembly build but for everything else, no problem.

Take the tension off of the torque wrench spring. . If not the spring will lose tension causing inaccurate readings. Always been that way with any torque wrench that uses a spring. The Snap-on HD type has a lever to relieve the tension on the spring. The twist style don't.

My dad was a mechanist by trade. He would not allow a click style torque wrench in his shop. The beam deflection torque wrench is always accurate and calibrated.
Richard Ehrenberg has a article in mopar action magazine a few months back explaining the virtues of the old school beam deflection torque wrench. In fact, he recommends you use the old school beam deflection to calibrate your chinesium click style.

Any micrometer wrench. (Twist to set). The split beam type , like the Snap on wrenches, don't have to be returned to zero. No spring to stretch. Those are sold by Precision Instruments and are a pretty good tool. Not cheap compared to Craftsman or Harbor Freight. I came from a dealership backround and was a MAC dealer for 28 years. I believe in spending more for certain quality tools.

A couple of years ago, I purchased 2 Craftsman torque wrenches, one a 3/8 drive, and the other a 1/2. First used them about 6 months ago during a refresh of my rear axle. Both head ratchets spin and will not set without manipulating the clockwise/counter clockwise lever multiple times. The 1st use of the 3/8 drive, snapped off a bolt from apparent improper factory calibration. Anyway, both are the cheapest, most POS tools I’ve ever bought. Warranty on mine was one year. I trashed them both.......Jim

Back in the late 90s, I was a hardware manager for Sears in Glendale CA. I can tell you that the Craftsman micro torque wrench has never had the lifetime warranty. Only the flex beam style did.
