I finally got up the nerve to try a rebuild on the 904 that came with my Belvedere. It had issues with slipping/-shuddering while in gear. (I admit to knowing absolutely nothing about automatic trans'.)
Anyway, got it opened up and looked like the fibers were worn pretty good and basically falling apart. The steels weren't burnt or pretty blue colors, they actually looked pretty pristine.
Long story short, after I replaced them and put the retaining ring back in, the stack in the direct drum seemed to be about 1/16 below the retainer ring. I can actually lift them that much. Seems sloppy...the other stack was right up to the retaining ring with no slop, yet they turn easily.
My question is, should they stack up tighter than that? They are just stock Raybestos waffle fibers and new steels. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a spec for the clearance and there should be some. More in the front drum, less in the rear.

904 front clutch clearance. Only applied in R and D
3 disc .042 -.087
4 disc .056 -.104

904 rear clutch. Applied in all forward gears only off in N and R
3 disc .018 -.036
4 disc .032 -.055

XX. EDIT. The clutched are different for each clutch pack. Front clutch they have waffle pattern of squares, rear clutch they have lines just one direction. The thickness is different. The snap rings come I different thickness to change the clearance. On a 727 the, snap rings interchange between front and rear clutch, same diameter.

IIRC those clutches are different? Did you get the correct ones in the correct drums? There should be some clearance so they can do their job. Did you test them with air before reinstalling?

There were two different types- waffle and smooth. I replaced them with the same type that came out of them. They ended up within the specs that R413 stated above. I did not test them with air...probably should have, but just wanted to get it back together. I did install a TF-2 shift kit while I was in there.
If the trans doesn't work correctly, I'll pull it out and take it to someone that DOES know what they're doing. I'll be slightly pissed, but since it's my first try at an auto trans I'll deal with it.
