Hello
I am going to rebuild my transmission out of my 67 coronet 383 2bl. I am not going to start a thread because there is lots of info on this subject...
I have identified the transmission, and the same as the engine I am pretty sure they are both original.
In 1967 the 2bbl and 4bbl 383, 727 Transmissions had 2 different casting numbers.
My question is , can anyone accurately describe the difference? I would rather know now before I start tearing into it, and rebuild it more to to the 4bbl specs...
I am not looking for a 600 hp capable rebuild, probably just going to pick up a mopar kit from Mancini and add a 2000-2500 stall.
Adding some photos, and I have read there was differences but haven't been able to read what they were.
Thx!

an educated guess is..... more clutch discs in the forward drum,a higher ratio front band apply lever, higher rpm shift points via different governor weights and/or spring.
just use 4 clutches in front drum, 4.2 ratio lever [if you can find one] and possibly get gov weights from a hp trans somewhere or order from A&A Transmission. B&M shift kit is inexpensive and works pretty well. good luck.

I assume you are referring to part numbers, not casting numbers? Castings are the same for different part numbers in a particular year. I prefer Transgo shift kits built to TF-2 specs.

Thanks
Yeah I was referring to the casting numbers. It seems to be that they were set up different between the HP and the normal 383. Same amount of front clutch disks, but the Hp used 6 return springs instead of 8 found on the normal 383.also the stall speeds were different.
I have changed my gearing to a 323 gearset and will be pushing a fair bit more hp than the stock 383 2 blc, so it looks like I will have to make some changes...
I may or may not attempt this myself. I do have a friend who has built lots of these transmissions, but he ain't a cheap friend lol. I definitely have some decisions to make but I think getting him to do it might be the wise one, especially when it comes to setting it up. Doesn't look too hard rebuilding it but getting it set up proper is a whole different ball game it seems.
Thanks again!

Get a FSM and a performance Torqueflite book and rip into it. One of the simplest automatics out there.

Any 727 will be strong enough. You may find these differences; the front clutch being a 3 or 4 plate (I have spare 4 plate units if you need one), different front clutch piston/spring count. 8, 10, 12, 15. 3 or 4 pin planets (either will be fine), KD lever ratios of 2.7, 2.9, 3.2, 3.8, 4.2, 5.0. Any lever will work in your application. 3.8 would be nice. The 4.2 are usually found in 904's. The other differences will be in governor and valve body calibration. I build a lot of 727's street, hotrod, race. Purchase what you need here.

I went to the local pullapart and got a pan and filter extension from a 518 which is about 1" deeper than stock 727 pan for $13. Got a weld in drain plug from Summit (

Strange Drain Plug Assemblies H1117D) for another $13. Had a deep pan for $26 with about an hours work.

Thank you! Lots of great info online, in books, and videos... looking forward to getting into it and hopefully it's all good, I am pretty sure it will be as the oil was clean.
