Am having this conversation with Ulli and cranky about this topic in other tread, I borrow my air compressor to the husband of one of my wife's niece, and six months later and nothing, already ask the mooch to return my tool and he just play fooled, I hate lend tools to other people simply because they don't know how to use it properly, all of us have seen how people use a lever in a ratchet tool, let's hear your horror story's about this.

Loan out tools and not get them back? Write them down and ask for them back.

I dont loan any thing out. Even to family. My fellow workers do not use anything of mine.

Loaned a Honda gas powered pressure washer and a compound saw to a family friend and they left it out in the ran for a few months.....needless to say that when returned....not working. They were all sheepish about it, but less so when I asked for $1100 to replace....still waiting for that.

If I happen to on a rare occasion borrow something I return it right after use. And I’m always careful to treat something borrowed with kid gloves or be willing to pay for a new one. I don’t mind lending someone as a favor but I’m not shy about asking for it back. Your relative is indeed a mooch and you should bug him about it - or have him buy you a new one.

Loaned out my 12" compound miter to a friend, with a couple extra Diablo blades for a trim job. Got my saw back but not the 3 extra blades. He claimed I never gave them to him and what would he need them for if he didn't have a saw. Same guy used my torque wrench and left it all wound up. He's cut off, as most other people. I just help people now and take my tools with me

I only loan to one guy who I borrow from. That said have had io over look some minor things. I borrowed a compression test and broke it. Went to the store bought (exactly same tool and maker) two of them one for him and one for me. Loaned a quality tap wrench to a guy he broke clamp part because he used it as a hammer. Said I'll get new one, what Igot was a $5 Ace hardware special. No more tools for him.

I loaned my car trailer once & the asshole brought it back with a flat tire.

I loaned a few engine building tools, ridge reamer, ring compressor, hone, gaping tool, ect to my former father-in-law and when I asked for them back he replied with "You're crazy they are my tools. You can borrow them if you need to." I tried to refresh his memory but I had no luck. He kept insisting that they were his. To keep peace in the family I let it go.

I don't lend tools. If you need it bad enough stop by with your car or part and we'll do it right here. I've lost way too many tools lending them out.

@coronet68mx Stop by his house with a couple of your buddies and take it back. The longer you let it go the more there is a chance that it might just disappear. I've seen it before.

I know, the worst part is that he's using it for upholstery, and is not an industrial compressor, I know you have to let the heads to cool down between loads is not intended for continued use, I said this to Ulli am an idiot I know I never borrow tools, call me selfish if you want but those are my tool s and the wife got in the middle of this ...:BangHead:

Yeah, I'm a big Pussy and can't say no.I've been burned plenty of times.
The guy next door loved to borrow from me.One day he up and died.
His son came from out of state to clean out the house.Never met him.
Didn't have the heart to go and say "That's mine". I was ok with it.
The worst was a guy borrowed my tow dolly. Took 3 years to get it back.
Had to take a few guys with me so no more excuses.Found out his wife was doing the towing and crashed it.
Had to straighten the frame. Again just can't say no.I have been able to say "Sorry no got ".

He should have the money to buy his own by now doing upholstery. Go get it and don't tell your wife.

I stopped loaning tools years ago for all the reasons above. I know it’s hard to say “no” to family and friends, but often if you don’t, they cease to be friends.

Unbelievable he own several acres of avocado trees and some acres of Mango, but he have a drinking problem, but is not my problem, he never have money, where or in what he spend his money am not sure, for shame because he have a beautiful wife and a lovely baby.

Sadly, I agree and came to this conclusion years ago.
With VERY, VERY few exceptions, I never loan out tools - and if I hand a tool over to someone, I
consider it gone, that simple.
That's the world we live in...

Took me a long time to learn my lesson. Too much to list and too painful to remember.
