Gasoline with tetraethyl lead, that is:

I remember those days at the Phillips 66 station back in the early 70's. Gas wars were at 19.9 cents.

Ethyl Corporation.

And there used to be a company named Ethyl that made the stuff. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethyl_Corporation
Not a very good history but so far, I'm still alive having lived southeast of the Houston based plant (Pasadena). My long gone father in law worked and retired from there....

Fill it up but don’t go over $3.
In 1970, I could fill up my Belvedere for 5 bucks and the tank was pretty empty....and was using Mobil Supreme at .36 per.

But a couple pennies more per gallon to put a tiger in your tank (Esso).:D and a few more pennies on top of that for Sunoco 260!

My first job was a gas jockey at Sinclair. Gas was $.39 per gal. Mid 70s. It then made a jump to about $.50 per gal. People were pissed. The Arabs were just getting warmed up.

My 1933 Imperial service manual recommend Ethyl, because of the high performance compression ratio. (6 1/2 to 1)
To keep the valve guides lubricated.

Actually the internal combustion motor was first designed to run on alcohol. Later, petroleum product was proven to carry more energy per cc than alcohol. The problem with gasoline? Its actually too good for higher performance applications. It auto detonates at too low of pressures. There is a platform that out performs all internal combustion designs. And its electric. Very impressive torque curve. I'm afraid its the future.

That was also tried about the time cars ran on alcohol and were cooled by the same. Will electric vehicles be just as short lived this time as last? Will the world supply of lithium out live oil?

Yes. Electric cars nearly won the motor wars in early 1900s. There are new battery technologies just around the corner. (I know, EVERYTHING is "Just around the corner.") And lithium will be a smaller player. At least percentage of material. The first is a carbon coned full lithium design. Twice the power storage and output of even the best lithium ion. And much safer. But still the problem of recharge time. Still takes too long. Especially for a even less patient consumer crowd.

Gulf No Knocks 118 octane.
Octane was figured differently back then.
No nox puts a kick in your tank!

Actually there is no such thing as an internal combustion motor.
Motors run on electricity. What people call motors are actually engines.

AVGAS isn't designed to be used in autos. Its made for large bore, slow turning, steady rpm engines. Its quite good in turbocharged aircraft engines which run high cylinder head temps. All that lead prevents detonation and valve seat recession.

You're on THAT side of the argument?
Explain MoPar.
General Motors.
FoMoCo
American Motor Corporation.
All of those companies sold cars with gasoline engines.
How about Motor Trend ?
General Electric sold appliances that ran on electricity, right?
